What does Sharon need to get her GED?

A friend of mine (Sharon) is 54 years of age and wants to get her GED, but she is afraid because she can't remember taking Algebra, etc. I have no idea what she needs to take to study for the GED tests, and I really have no insights about the GED. So, I turn to the humble and reliable folks at AT who might have gotten a GED to tell me what she'll need. ;)

Some points she mentioned to ask everyone:

1. She wants to get her GED in one session. Whatever that means. (I assume the test must be rather long if that's the case).
2. She's sort of anxious about being in a classroom and has trouble focusing under stress (have no idea how to help her here, never experienced that myself).
3. She has no idea what to study for. (I recommended Rio Salado College - Online GED Prep Test).

<< What could she possibly need a GED for at 54 years old? >>

She wants to go to college and become a teacher.

Tell her that she's too old to be socially useful and try to recommend a good home for her;)

Seriously, 54 is a bit late to try and become a teacher, especially if you never graduated high school.

Haha. :) Well, I am still trying encourage her. She can't even get a decent job without a diploma, regardless of her desire to become a teacher. She's single and has no benefits.

My mom learned how to drive at 65 and became a teacher for children who have Down's Syndrome. It's never too late to do anything until your in a grave.

If she can tie her shoes she can pass the G.E.D.

I knew some seriously intellectually challenged individuals (morons) who were able to pass it, Sounds to me that she needs to be pumped up (no, not like that) reassure her that she can do it, because she can! (tell her I said so)

give the woman some goddammed credit, at least she has ambitions other than sitting on her ass collecting welfare checks. Hell, a 54 year old women with not even a GED wanting to become a teacher is one of the most inspiring and ambitious things I've ever heard.

Most places will have GED refresher courses.

Best bet is for her to take them to determine what she needs to brush up on.
GED testing is usually equivalent to a 10th grade education.

Then she should go to a community college for a couple of years to get the basics under her belt.
1) Ensures that she really wants to and is able to re-start schooling in a serious way.
2) Keeps the cost lower. - At 50+ the college social life is not going to cut it for her.
Most all kids there are age of her kids. Some of the instructors will also be.

After a BS/BA she should be able to start teaching in the middle/elementary levels with no problem in an area of her choosing.

That sounds like excellent advice. I thank you on her behalf. Just talked with her and she said that sounds "perfect". :)

Lucky: You just made her day. ;)

<< But she's 54! >>

And she'll still be 54 if she doesn't get her GED.
God Bless her for wanting to improve herself!

well, all I can say is good luck. I don't know how easy it is to get a job as a 58 year old teacher w/ no experience.

good luck to your friend... my mom went back to school and got in to UW computer science (which i got rejected from :p), and now she's got her BS in CS at 40 or something like that. little younger, but just goes to show that anything's possible if you try hard enough.

i think the best thing for her to do would be to get some practice GED tests or something.. i'm sure you can find them at a bookstore or something.

Wow. Another amazing success story. This thread has hada very positive effect on her so far and I talked to her again and she said she is going to go with EagleKeeper's advice and just take the test to see if she can pass it. We may have worked out a way for her to go to a private testing session where she can focus on her work. Thanks everyone! :)

EDIT: take not ake hehe
