What does science fiction say about Mars?

I have to write a paper for my science 102 class about mars, and part of the assignment is:

"it would be helpful to point out a few things which often happen in science fiction which are in fact not possible -- and why"

I don't know what often happens in science fiction besides martians, so I don't know what the hell to write. Can anyone throw out some stuff?

What kind of impossible shit happens on Mars in science fiction? The most common thing seems to be colonization or terraforming, but neither of those things are all that far-fetched

Just think of the most improbable thing you can regarding mars. For example, humans will build a ladder from Earth to Mars, connecting the two, and locking them in a connected orbit. This is, of course, pure bullshit, but it's easy to explain why.

Feel free to use that. If your teacher asks what science fiction that comes from, tell her Atomic Playboy. Sounds like a good sci-fi title, doesn't it?

Finding alien relics, closely followed by terraforming. The former is pure speculation, while the latter is likely infeasible with the projected industrial base.

"Get your ass to mars" is followed closely by " I wish I had three hands" as most memorable Total Recall quotes :)

terraforming Mars is not possible. The planet is not big enough to hold an oxygen nitrogen atmosphere. It can barely hold the CO2 atmosphere it has now. It simply lacks enough gravitational force to hold onto a dense atmosphere.

"Hey Benny! Screw you!" is the best line in any film ever.

Watch the Invader Zim episode, "Battle Of The Planets." Mars was turned into a giant spaceship by an alien race that is now extinct. Their reason? "Because it was cool!"

so apparently there was this super advanced race of aliens on Mars eons ago and then a super asteroid collided with the planet. the impact rendered the planet unlivable so the aliens left but not before shooting off their seedlings to a nearby planet. These seedlings then became Humans.

According to who? I think if we could create enough oxygen and other greenhouse gases on mars it would support life just fine.

my biggest space opera pet peeves
1. space ships executing turns as though they were airplanes
2. explosions in space (or propulsion engine exhaust) being audible at a distance
