What does religion do for you?

This of course, is not for atheists or agnostics. And if I have labeled you in correctly, well then I am asking for the response of those who believe in a well known (or unknown) religion.

What keeps you coming back for more?

First, define religion. Does it have to have a deity? Does it have to have a system of morals? Does it have to create a sense of community? A way to live your life? All of those, some of those?

What do you mean by religion?

It's not directly what it does for me (as if it were UPS). It's about truth: knowing what is true, accepting it, and living according to it. That is what the Bible is, what true religion is, and the truth of the Bible leads to knowing God. Regardless of whether I wanted to believe in the Bible or not, it is true. Just as I have no choice in accepting whether I exist, or whether gravity is real (I guess I could deny either or both, but that would be foolish), I have no choice in accepting the Word of God as true. Whether it does something for me or not is secondary.

you have a choice. i made a different choice after 20 years of hardcore religion in my life.

so basically were gonna get another craptastic thread. im with the "lock it up" crowd

actually, im against more subforums, but lets have a religion forum and get it over with.

My belief system brings me comfort in that which I nor any man can ever truly understand. My relationship with the unknown is purely my own and I accept that. This gives me good mental health.

Not to mention picking up chicks at a church is oh so rewarding in more ways than one.

That could be too many things though. Knowing the usual slant of religion threads I think this thread is about any or any combination of definitions 1a, 1b, 2, and 3. Alternatively it could be about definition 4 in conjunction with any or any combination of the other definitions, but never 4 alone. That should go in the OP.

Drags me kicking and screamming to hell!

religion is just another trick played on the poor masses to keep them under control.

Ask not what your Bible can do for you, but what you can do for your Bible?

Humans fear two things: death and exclusion. Religion provides a means to comfort both fears.

yeah, but many use it as an excuse to fear those things even more.

e.g. Hell and Purgatory.

it makes me pissed off

Anger and jealousy are just about tied as the most harmful emotions. They are entertwined as one leads to the other.

Your anger comes from the struggle to control the things you cannot, by definition. It's all basic psychology. Seek peace and acceptance within yourself and you will find peace with the world.

You know everything written in the Bible is true?

Nothing. Religion is an excuse for the weak mind to understand the unexplainable.

Actually it is the weak mind that attempts to understand the unexplainable. The unexplainable is just that, not able to explain. I hope you somehow find acceptance to your troubled mind. Peace be with you as man will never understand everything.
