What does race have to do with it?

WTF... I was watching The View (yeah, I know... it was just on...) and there was a commercial break and the fat black woman had a little segment that said "blah blah.... Breast cancer is the second most deadly cancer for African American women..... blah blah... have a mammogram..."

WTF... WHY WOULD YOU SAY ANYTHING ABOUT BEING AFRICAN AMERICAN!?!?

Oh ok... so white women can just go ahead and have breast cancer, but if you're African American you need to have a mammogram?

I am so sick of these stupid specialty commercials for certain races...

There is also a "Black Family Expo" at the fair grounds this month sometime... Can I go if I'm white?

Arg....

WTF dude - get over your hyper-sensitive self. The fact of the matter is, there could be a higher incedent of breast cancer in black women, so the purpose of the ad was to bring awareness to that demographic group.

I would understand if it were a segment for sickle cell anemia or something... but breast cancer? Come on...

There are myths going around that need to be addressed. For example, for decades men were told to get regular cholesterol and other heart related tests since men are more likely (when compared to women) to die from heart disease. So men learned to do this and are basically doing what they need to do. Unfortunately women weren't told to do the same. But heart disease is also the #1 killer for women. So women should be doing all these tests as well. A generic "test for heart condition" commercial would not help the men, and it would be ignored by women since they have the myth that men are the only ones who needs to worry. What is the governments solution: yep all the ads you see now telling women to get their hearts checked as well. This isn't to say that men suddenly shouldn't do their tests, but that men are already doing them, and a specific ad to women is the only way to get their attention.

The same myth applies to breast cancer. The myth is that white women get it. Men forget they can get breast cancer as well, so do African American women.

Read this geniuses....

The breast cancer incidence for African American women is lower than White women, and higher than Latinos. In any one year, 95 out of every 100,000 African American women are diagnosed with breast cancer. In comparison, 112 out of every 100,000 White women, and 70 out of every 100,000 Latinos are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Race again huh. For years blacks havent been accepted as part of society. Yes we may be equal now, but that is just recent. Of course you can go to the black family expo and you can even watch BET and get on a show if you like. Black people just like to do things and be around other people that are similar to them(to them, i mean us) No where does it say, no whites allowed. But would a white person who doesnt feel comfortable around Blacks go to such an event. If they are comfortable go ahead. I (as well as many other Blacks) have no problems doing something in an extremely white environment.

Read this, genius.
Although white women have the highest incidence rate for breast cancer, African American women die more often from the disease.

African American women have the highest mortality and lowest survival rates for breast cancer.
Which is exactly what the commercial you quoted in your little rant stated.

The point of the commercial was to make black women aware that although there are less incidents of breast cancer in black females, it can be even more deadly.

Since no one knows the root causes of cancer, the notion that there's a genetic predisposition that's tied to race isn't entirely out of the question.

Although it's more likely there's a societal lack of awareness about the importance of regular mammograms among the African-American community.

What you say is true, which is why commercials such as this are important.

An african american is less likely to seek out medical help or health screenings because of financial situations or urban settings. They are just trying to get the word out, they had no malice against caucasion women.

The point is that they wanted to target a group with the commercial that they felt wasn't being targeted. Either because that group wasn't paying attention or because that group felt they weren't susceptible to such a thing. The commercial picked a classy way to say "hey you need to do this too!".

Targetting your audience isn't always about racism.

Racism? I am racist because I notice too many African American comments on TV?

My point is that they shouldn't make a commercial about a disease, then limit it to a single race. That is racism.

How would you like to see a McDonald's commercial that said, "You African Americans will love our new Extra Value Meals!"

I have no problem with this. Women in the black community, especially lower income blacks are far less likely to get mammograms done, and thus are more likely to die of breast cancer because it's found far too late.

The fact that a black woman has to get on TV and specifically tell other black women of the dangers of breast cancer is sad, but it's further evidence of the now self imposed separatism many black people and popular black culture are relegating themselves to.

Ideally, no. The commercial is not good. But realistically, it's what needs to be done to get black women to go get mammograms.

Well, the fact that you notice "too many African American comments on TV" does make you sound racist.

And the commercial is not racist, as werk, grey and amused have stated so well. Perhaps if you read the other posts in this thread with your brain on it might help...

omg... do you guys even understand what I am saying...

There should be no references to race at all, especially when referring to a race-wide disease!

I am understanding what you're saying. But did you understand what I said?

In the REAL world, black women are much more likely to die from breast cancer because of no early detection by mammograms. Much of black culture has separated itself from, and is suspicious of, whites. While not ideal, it is realistically the best move to have one black woman tell other black women to get mammograms.

edro, are you some middle class white dude all up in arms about this even though you are not really affected?

If you are, STFU.

If you arent, put down the race card for everything and STFU.
