What does quartz.dll do? WMP?

I recently installed Windows Media Player 11. When I had Media Player 10, whenever I opened my library in thumbnail mode, and I had a few .avi files in my library, it would crash with the culprit being quartz.dll (or so said Dr. Watson postmordem).

I fixed this by making sure I always selected "details" view instead of thumbnails. However, thumbnails is the default view for WMP11 and I can't switch it to "details" before it crashes.

I should also mention I have this problem in Windows Explorer, and other media players, like the one that comes with Shareaza.

I tried reinstalling all of the .dll files from my original installation disc, but that doesn't work.

Anyone have any ideas?

Quartz.dll is a DirectX subroutine, and you problem may be related to this MS KB:

you prob have an older vers of directX 9.0c - they come out every 2 months - current is Dec 06
download redistributable from MS (59.2MB)
do a search on O/S partition for and run run dxdiag.exe and see if you even have 9.0c
Always run updating dirX .exe in safe mode
if when you try to install, it gives already there message, you will have to go to add/remove/MS and "remove" dirX, which will roll you back to 8.1, then latest will install

quartz.dll is basically the whole multimedia subsystem of Windows.

You have a crashing decoder somewhere. Have you installed any codec packs? If not, try installing ffdshow and enable AVI decode support in it. Maybe the thumbnail previews will not crash then. If the problem persists you will just have to disable thumbnail AVI preview altogether.
