What does passing Memtest86+ and failing OCCT (ram) mean?

so my ram passes Memtest86+ V2.01 (2 x 1gb Ballistix)
but when i install a fresh OS and run OCCT (ram) i get errors.

what does this indicate? what can i do to fix it?

Are you overclocking anything? Chipsets can also produce instability if pushed too far, overheating, insufficient voltage, etc.

it was my understanding from what I read in OCCT documentation that it doesn't test the RAM OR the CPU. it tests BOTH but to varying degrees, stressing the CPU or the Ram moreso then the other depending on your choice.

It COULD thus mean that you are having CPU errors but your ram is stable if you fail OCCT and pass ram.

Alternatively, it could be an issue with windows or OCCT itself. Or what rubycon said.

Are you over clocking at all? How many passess did it get with memtest? try leaving it for 24 hours straight on memtest testing.
Also, did you make sure to check the wall-time on memetest? if you left it 24 hours ago and you see 0 errors with a walltime of 3 hours then that means it crashed 3 hours ago and came back up (since it boots right into the test as long as the disk is in the drive). I saw it happen once.

Northbridge unstable?

If you want an example, my 8 GB @ auto timings @ DDR2-1050 passed 7 passes of Memtest86+ the other night (that's basically 7 hours of testing with 8 GB).
Yet it errors in HCI Memtest in less than a couple hours.

I don't think it's RAM that's the issue so much as the it's the NB, at least in my case.

For you with only two dimms, that's less likely though.

I've mentioned many times before though that Memtest86+ isn't nearly as hard on RAM/NB as some other tests...

Try HCI & see what happens...i'm curious to hear what happens.

Or if you really want to put it thru a thrashing, get Linpack (& configure it for 2 GB, or it'll pretty much lock up your system).

BTW are you sure the CPU is stable?

Is OCCT the only thing you are unstable with? Have you tried stressing the unit any other way?

nope because in my exp, if a system fails OCCT, it will fail p95 also, just in a longer period of time.. ex: OCCT fail @ 30 mins, P95 would fail in about 8 hours.

EDIT: oh yea and testing HCI memtest 1 x 1gb in windows, each stick would pass with over 300% coverage (about an hour test each)
it seems that OCCT is where the failure comes
heres my current scenario...

each of my 2 x 1gb sticks pass Memtest86+ v2.01 on different slots (thus eliminating bad ram or bad DIMM slot, right?)

fresh install of windows, only program installed are wireless drivers, graphics drivers, sound drivers, and speedfan and OCCT. Test: 2 x 1gb together on OCCT (ram) test and it would either fail, or BSOD.

could it be that i've pwned my NB by overvolting it from about 2 weeks ago? i had it a few notches up over default

The symptoms don't immediately scream CPU but, your Vcore looks a bit low for a 400 FSB.

Definitely agree there. Try bumping your vcore up by atleast .05v.

My x3210 is a pretty good overclocker, but it still needs 1.32v to run at 3.6ghz.

On my system OCCT is also always failing on memory test.
It fails also with stock settings.

It's not failing with memtest86, HCI memtest or with Windows Memory Diagnostic even after running them several hours.
Also prime95 is stable.

System have been otherwise stable, except on that OCCT memory test.

Holy $**# I just made it fail and had NO IDEA there was a freaking quacking noise in there! Scared the bejesus out of me and probably 100 others.

that means u probably have a problem with your memory, mb dimm slots, or nb, or anything related to your ram.

my system does the same thing as yours @ complete stock settings

SOLVED!

OCCT RAM test failed even when underclocked and memory @ 667MHz. Failure comes in 2 to 30 minutes.
But I have now solved the problem. I did set the "Disable Unused PCI Clock" in bios to false.
After that Q6600 overclocked to 8*433 passed the 2h RAM test two times and I ran custom RAM test for 4h 45min without crash.

More about the setting is here:
http://www.techarp.com/showfreebog.aspx?lang=0&bogno=59

Looks like it's further developed "Spread spectrum":
http://www.techarp.com/showfre....aspx?lang=0&bogno=133

Setup:

Abit IP35-E bios v15
2x1GB AxeRam 800MHz D9GMH @ 866MHz 4-4-4-12
Q6600 (8x433 = 3464MHz) + Noctua NH-U12F
EVGA GF 8800 GTS 512
