No seriously. What type of gun, what state?

Most states 18 to purchase long guns, 21 to purchase handguns. Fill out a few simple forms, may be required to watch a video or take a safety course in some states, and wait for a background check if it is a restricted weapon.
Don't you need a background check for any handgun? Or are they all restricted?

The thing that really surprised me when I bought my first handgun (in Colorado) is the fact that it took a little under an hour and I was able to walk out of the store. Where I'm from (Indiana) you have to wait a few days for them to do a full background check. Here in Colorado, I was able to hand them my driver's license (1 day old, at the time) and walk out of the store with a gun forty five minutes later. The VERY disturbing part about all of it was the fact that because my license was so new, it wasn't even in the system when the guy called. So, technically, they didn't even run a background check on me. Just handed me the gun after I handed them the credit card.

Thinking about buying a gun Skoorb?
I don't think I'd be allowed to until I became a permanent resident but regardless of that fact Mrsskoorb just would not stand for it, so I don't even get my hopes up. And I don't think it's even up for discussion if I did want one

That's what lock boxes are for.

In Minnesota, there's a background check, unless you have a purchase permit, 1-2 week wait on the permit, but if you have it you can walk into a store and walk out with your handgun. that's the way it was, haven't bought a new pistol in about 2 years now.

Sounds like concealed carry is going to pass here finally, only took about 8 years.

I 100% agree with the above. A gun is not something you really should just buy and try and figure out yourself. Professional training is available just about everywhere. Ask at your local gun store, or check out the NRA website. An NRA approved basic pistol/rifle course is a good way to go. Ideally take the class first, and then rent guns at a range until you find one that works well for you. Then go out and make the investment in a gun.

I go by what my instructor and also my father told me when I went through a class at age 12:

Point a gun at someone and you damn well better be prepared to kill them
