what does it take to purchase a gun?

im 22 and live in CA. Looking to get a hand gun. Just wanted to know what the process consisted of and where to go about getting a license if needed, etc.

Money...

No seriously. What type of gun, what state?

Most states 18 to purchase long guns, 21 to purchase handguns. Fill out a few simple forms, may be required to watch a video or take a safety course in some states, and wait for a background check if it is a restricted weapon.

justint hit it on the head. I just turned 21 in december and bought a handgun, took a while but i finally received my concealed carry permit (PA resident). Can't wait for the next trip to the shooting range!

Not a painful process here in PA, not sure about other states tho.

Don't you need a background check for any handgun? Or are they all restricted?

wether required or not, i would HIGHLY recommend going through some sort of training for whatever gun you buy. You fill out some forms, and they run a background check to make sure your not a criminal, then issue you your gun, case and all, and buy some ammo, and register for training at their location or a local rod and gun club, and presto, thats it. . .your set.

please please take training by a professional.

Handguns are always restricted, some states have restrictions/waiting periods on certain long guns as well.

Thinking about buying a gun Skoorb?

Lucky bastard. I don't know how its in NY. I'm going to have to wait till next year to see get a handgun myself. Its Ironic I can get a shotgun now.. but have to be 21 for a handgun (yes I know why but still ironic hehe 😉 )

I'm looking into getting a trusty Colt 1911.. .45's kick butt, maybe a nice Socom also.

I don't think I'd be allowed to until I became a permanent resident but regardless of that fact Mrsskoorb just would not stand for it, so I don't even get my hopes up. And I don't think it's even up for discussion if I did want one

😕

I 100% agree with the above. A gun is not something you really should just buy and try and figure out yourself. Professional training is available just about everywhere. Ask at your local gun store, or check out the NRA website. An NRA approved basic pistol/rifle course is a good way to go. Ideally take the class first, and then rent guns at a range until you find one that works well for you. Then go out and make the investment in a gun.

Alabama has hardship exemptions for lots of people. You might qualify because you are married and not a permanent resident.

How often do the ranges clean the rental guns?

Not all that often at most ranges. You would be surprised at how many people rent those guns and then put maybe a half a box of ammo through it. They should be functional however, just dirty and not all that smooth.

That wouldn't work for me though. I put at least 500 rounds through my handguns every time I shoot them, and more through the long guns and sub guns.

I just went through this.

1. Go to gun store.
2. Take Handgun Safety Certificate test--40 questions, need 27 to pass, all are multiple choice or true/false. Very easy, but you can buy a study guide for less than a dollar that covers all you need to know to pass.
3. Put money down on gun.
4. Demonstrate that you can load/unload and operate the gun.
5. Wait 10 days.
6. Go back and pickup gun.

For me, I have a pistol, which my dad had till he passed away, and it now sits loaded in his breifcase he used for work ( was a bus driver ). and quite frankly i'm not all that keen on even touching it. I am not comfortable with firearms like pistols. Mostly because i've seen how easy it could be to shoot your foot. Point is, if i ever wanted to use it, i would deff get training right off the bat. This is something ANYONE who is getting into shooting sports should consider. Otherwise, you just might shoot yourself in the foot, both literally and figurativly.

Ok,
If you are not comfortable with even touching it you need to get someone who is to unload it and then LOCK IT UP in a safe place until you do get the training or get rid of it. You can take it to your local police department. That gun is a big accident waiting for a happening right now and it is useless to you.

When she's working a night shift or 2, she might change her mind. I stopped @ a gas station in the wrong part of town a few months ago & it really opened my eyes. Crack & pot smoke in the air, hookers, gang bangers, etc, real nice place....

Anyway, here's

That's a very risky argument approach because her answer, instead of "OK let's go buy a Sig" would be "Back to Canada we go."

I'm glad MrsSkoorb won't allow skoorbie to have a gun. Just what we need, another unstable person with a gun.

I feel safer already!
