What does it mean when...

ugh

... the machine hangs when rebooted using the OS (be it Windows or Linux). The only way is to manually press the Reset button to get it to reset properly. I thought it was the faulty RAM stick last time, but the problem is still occuring even though I've pulled it out.

This PC has an ASUS P2B, Celeron 266, Canopus Spectra 2500 and 64MB RAM.

Many things can cause this behavior. Are you saying it will shutdown fine, but it hangs on restart? It happens in BOTH OSes???

One quick thing to try for Windows is the "shutdown supplement" that can be found at windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

Are you on TeAm AnandTech?

There's only one PCI card in the system which is the sound card. I guess that rules the conflict out 😀

Exactly. It's not the OS which hangs, but the system. The monitor goes into DPMS mode and the hard disk light is lit all the time.

Hmm.... I don't think that would help. But I'll give it a try anyhow. Thanks for the link.
