that you're driving with your parking break on and your brake now = teh gone.

Edit: or it could mean your ABS isn't working properly.

The handbrake usually doesn't actuate the brake lights, does it?

Yes it does, on some cars, and assuming that you're talking about the brake MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) and not the tail-lights. Low brake fluid will also trigger the light. As will the failure of one of the car's two braking circuits. ABS will have its own failure light that is separate from the brake MIL.

If the brake MIL is on, SERVICE THE BRAKING SYSTEM IMMEDIATELY, DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR.

I was thinking he meant the actual brake lights in the back of the car.
I know that the dash indicator light in newer cars will be on if the handbrake is engaged.

Sorry for all the confusion!

🙂

Mine came on because (don't know exactly what caused it) it seems somehow or another the brake pad was at an odd angle, and started wearing into the rotor. Soon as we changed the pads, it went out, but sooner or later I'm going to have to get a new rotor, based on looking at this one.

Get the brake hydraulic system checked. An anomaly in front or rear hydraulic circuits can cause the BRAKE lamp to glow. A leaking cylinder, chaffed line, stuck proportioning valve or bad master cylinder can cause this. DO NOT wait until it's too late and you cannot stop the car!

Cheers!

Sooner rather than later. That oddly-worn rotor will wear the brake pads oddly again and that will make things worse. You ought to have replaced both the pads (on all wheels) and the rotor.
