I like to chew on my pens, my sweaters, plastic bottle caps, paper, etc. I heard that freud said it was due to sexual frustration, is this true? any other ideas?
you are correct that Freud had something to say about this.. but its not about sexual frustration.
"oral fixations" are a sign that you were not breast fed as a child, but bottle-fed. It hold true with me, because I always chew on random objects, straws, plastic bottle caps, pens, etc. and I was bottle fed as a baby .
I also have a very healthy oral fixation to the female breast
<< The oral stage lasts from birth until about the first year of life. During this stage, the child is entirely dependent on the mother for survival. Satisfaction of the id's drive towards pleasure comes from sucking on the mother's breast (thus the "oral stage". Freud believed that certain amounts of libido could be fixated at this stage or at later stages, and that such fixation could have long-term effects on personality. Fixation at the oral stage could lead to oral behaviors later in life, such as thumb sucking as a child or gum chewing or cigarette smoking in adults. It could also have more abstract consequences, such as a desire to passively absorb knowledge or love. >>
Interesting connection Valhalla, I wonder what Freud would say about me though. I generally only chew on things (usually my lower lip) when I'm thinking hard about something, I guess it's my equivalent of a HDD LED. On occasion I do it when nervous, but definitely not every time I'm nervous. Now I've got to find a Psych major to explain this to me because you guys have my interest piqued.
It could be a sign of nerves. Sometimes it's just something people do like tap their feet or twiddle their thumbs. It can also be a sign of frustration. If you want to correct it, dip the end of whatever you chew on most (a pen say) into something that won't hurt you but tastes nasty (vinegar maybe). Then when you go to chew on it, you stop because it leaves a nasty taste in your mouth.
I dunno about the Freud theory, but sometimes I mumble parallel thoughts, incoherently, during moments of inspiration(about a quarter of the time). I also suffer from insomnia. The surgeon general says that excessive chewing may result in higher dentist bills.
