What does it mean when an older dog "nibbles" on a younger puppy?

If some of you remember, i asked about how we should introduce a new female puppy to an older female a month ago. So far, the two dogs have been getting along. They even share the same water bowl and sleeping cot now. The only thing i'm worried about now is that the older dog will sort of nibble on the younger puppy, the same way that the older dog nibbles on herself when scratching herself. it worries me because the younger puppy doesn't always like the nibbling, and the older dog only seems to do it when i'm around, or any other person. plus, I usually feed the dogs by seperating them (one outside, one inside the garage, with a closed door in between). my brother decided to feed them both outdoors, in seperate areas, and that didn't turn out too well. but, today, my bro was feeding the two dogs, the younger puppy ran to the older dog's bowl, and the little puppy was mauled and swung about, her nose was also bleeding :(
i'm just a little worried. they seem to get along fine after the fight, but the older dog still nibbles on the younger one.

I would say it something to do with who is in charged. Your older dog wants to make sure she is still the boss. My two dogs do the same this. HTe younger one tried to get a bone the older one had and...well lets jsut say she will never try that again.

It's a grooming thing, and a good sign. Like when they lick out each other's ears (ewww, gross) but it's a friendly thing.

i figured it might have something to do with grooming, but the puppy doesn't always look as if she enjoys the grooming.

well i didn't enjoy it too much when my mom used to spit in a hankie and wipe my face, but that was a grooming thing too...
