what does it mean when an egg has a gas pocket in it?

I cracked an egg this morning and it had yolk, a little bit of white, and the rest of the space inside was taken up by this giant pocket full of some kind of gas and surrounded by a thin film.

I've eaten a lot of eggs in my life and have never noticed this before... sounds suspect. Since a dozen only causts a little over a buck...I'd probably pass and use some new eggs.

Typically if there is gas in an egg it is going bad or is bad. That is why the water test works... if you put an egg in a bowl/glass of water and it floats it is bad (because the gas has built up inside). If it sinks it is still good. If it stands on end, it is closer to going bad, but, supposedly if it's not floating it's ok.

Stranger than that is a double yolk. I once had a dozen where 9 of the 12 were double yolks...

Grosser than that is a blood spot. That seriously creeps me out and I throw it away. I know there's nothing wrong with it but still, ew.

Yeah, I can't eat eggs with a spot like that, either. Seriously messes up my appetite for some reason.

you guys have never eaten hard boiled eggs? it's the air cell between the white and the shell at the large end. It's normal and the air should be there.
