What does it mean when a potential employer tells me this?

I'll try to keep this short and sweet.

At a career fair at my college last fall, I spoke with various employers and passed out my resume to a few of them, hoping to land an internship for this summer. One employer seemed fairly interested, and a few weeks later emailed me an invitation to an "information session" where they would explain more about the position and what was involved, etc. I attended this session, spoke with some of their people, and a few weeks later was emailed a link to a personality test to see if I was a good fit for the job. I got another email after a few more weeks saying that they would like to interview me for a summer internship. I went in and the interview seemed to go pretty well- the interviewer even complemented me for asking good questions relating to the job. Yet at the end of the interview, the interviewer told me that the company did not have any positions currently available, but he gave me his business card and told me to call him in a month to see if anything had opened up. The week I was going to call him I got an email from another person at the company saying that all positions were full, thank you for applying, etc.

What I am wondering is if this means I fvcked up the interview somehow. I mean, why would you have an applicant go through this whole process, call them in for an interview, and then tell them you don't have any internships available?

There are three major factors that I suspect could have influenced this:
I'm only a sophomore in college; most students don't get internships until junior or senior year.
They made it clear at the info session that they wanted people who were passionate about the job and had a high level of interest. I told the interviewer that while the job certainly seemed interesting, I simply cannot say with any certainty what career path I wish to pursue, and I'm still exploring my options.
When I get nervous (at things like, you know, job interviews) my eye contact tends to suck. Though I really don't think it was that bad, and like I said, I really felt that the interview went pretty well.

Can someone on here that does hiring/HR interpret what this is all supposed to mean? Did I screw up? Let me know if you need more info.

Sometimes they have to interview a specific number of people whether they plan on hiring 1 person or 10 people. It's like a quota law thing so they can demonstrate that they DID interview a specific number of people (even if internally, they already know who they are going to hire).

Although I don't do hiring of any sort, I would say call him anyways. My guess would be that the email you got (from another person, not the guy you interviewed with correct?) was a mass email sent out to all applicants who were not immediately placed. If the guy you interviewed with told you to call him, definately do it, if for no other reason than to maintain the contact. Getting an internship/job is, in many situations, more about who know know rather than what you know.
