What does it mean if Prime95 fails at default CPU clocks?

I got this xp2100+ AIUHB 0301 and i immediately bumped the fsb to 166 to make it xp2700+. I bumped the vcore up to 1.7 just incase. I ran prime95 but failed before the first test was even done.

So I cranked it lower and lower till I even hit my default speeds 1734mhz and it still fails within the first or second test. What does this mean?? Bad chip?

did it run ok with your old cpu on your setup?

i was having instability @ default speeds w/ my 2100+. not just prime95, but IE, windows explorer would just quit.

in a fit of madness i did a reformat & clean install of windows. problem solved! :) now i'm at 2.2GHz (11*200) w/ 4222 memory timings. 1.775 vCore

Hmm, my old 1700+ worked fine and ran prime95 oced to 2000mhz. Maybe I need a clean install of OS, but nothing has changed. I dont see why this would be neccessary.

yeah, i agree. the unstable system i had was a new install w/ this board & cpu.

I've had Prime95 errors that were caused by an obscure OS file, corrupted by my high FSB.

Try a clean OS install first.

Bad PSU?

Reformat, reinstall OS, and try again. If that doesn't help, I would assume the PSU can't feed the CPU enough voltage.

the first thing i would do is reinstall windows. i would then put everything to bog standard and see if it is stable. then, go gradually increase speeds until you hit instability.

Kewl, thanks guys. Imma try to do a reinstall first today, then check some stability. I will post later in the afternoon with results.

wait wait... before you go reinstall windows... check the rails on yoru voltage for your PSU...

you can use USDM if you have an 8rda+ or MBM which you can download from the top of this forum...

please report your rail readings here...

your 3.3V and 5V

also... how big is your PSU? and what kind?

I have an epox board and using USDM, I have a 3.3 voltage anywhere from 3.28-3.3 at load, my 5v rail is 5.018 idle and drops down to around 4.975 under full load. My vcore which is default 1.6v never drops even under load.
I have an Enhance 350w PSU which has a 220w 3.3v+5v combined output.

I did notice when I overclock my chip to 13x166 @ 1.7v the vcore does start varying under load anywhere from 1.685- 1.7v. And my 5v drops even further around 4.895. And also I can audibly head my fans crank a little louder when I have my cpu overclocked. Is that normal? My fans are not rheostat controlled at all, but I can definately hear the fans spool a little louder when I either overclock or run the processor under full load.

lol i can hear the same diff with my cpu idle /under load

i think it has to do with psu and not supplying a constant voltage....but whatever

voltages look ok...
have you tried running memtest86?

thist ime try memtest86 with cpu cache enabled for all tests
you let it complete the whole series of "loops" correct?

Ugh, something went wrong and said someting about gdi32.dll and my computer wouldnt boot anymore. I reinstalled windows and everything works fine now. Another thing was everytime I tried to set my page file to a custom size, my computer would reboot.

Well, I have only been on this for 6 hours but nothing has gone wrong so far and I can freely adjust the page file. Thanks for the help guys.

BTW imma try memtest with cache enable just in case too.

I ran memtest on my new crucial 512mb pc2700 and it gave me over 500 errors. I think that contributed to my reformat....
