What does having more memory in a PDA do? Like 32MB onboard vs. 128MB?

Dumb question I know.

Does this serve the same function as in a PC?

The reason I ask is because I have a feeling that it may be to do with how many programs you can fit without using an extra card like an SD or CF card. If that's the case, then there is no point in getting more internal memory no? As it's probably cheaper to get a 128MB card than more onboard ram. But at the same time, RAM tends to erase after the machine is off. (This is assuming the 32mb and 128mb device are identical)

Or is it a performance issue, which makes sense. More ram allows more room for work before having to clear a module and move in new data, less swapping of data so to speak.

So, what's the poop?

It kind of depends on the PDA. Usually it can be both storage and operating RAM. The specs for the model will usually tell you how it is divided. Keep in mind that depending on what format card the PDA uses and the model, the expansion cards may be much slower than the RAM. I.E. I have a sharp Zaurus, and the SD slot is far too slow to run programs off of(It's fine for storing ebooks and other data though).

Ok lets take this Linky PDA as an example. Exact same specs on the 1 and 2 model, except the 1 has 32MB, and the 2 128MB.

What will the 128MB one be able to do better that the 32MB one and a 96MB SD card couldn't do?

Memory in palms lets them hold more stuff. They have XIP: Execute in place, and part of their memory (a few megs) is already devoted to RAM-like purposes. Yes, the Tapwave is a Palm.
Pocket PC memory is split into running (like Ram on a PC) and storage (like a disk on a PC).

If you have PPC, I recommend 64MB, not 32MB. The running mem itself will take like 15-30MB normal use, and if you have a 32MB PPC, you can barely store any essential stuff on the internal mem. Of course, in any case, you should use separate SD and/or CF cards to store the bulk of apps.

Just get as much built-in storage as possible and then add on with cards.
