what does hard shutdowns do to your hardware?

u mean just pulling the plug ? nothing... though you'll lose some data on the software side.. but i seen it done many times...

hardware?

Your HD might knock and mess up if you do it a lot... it will mess up your software thought. Corrupt windows, lose unsaved data, etc.

If your computer doen't shut down, that could mean something is still running in your task manager.
Check that first.

The issues that you may hear about deal with write caching on the hard drive. Where your hard drive has information sitting in the cache that hasn't been written yet and a hard shutdown will cause that data to be lost (possibly). Other than that, I don't know of any situation where a hard shutdown would hurt your computer, but I'd never pull the plug like some other user mentioned 😵. Just something I won't do...
