What does gmail use for spam filtering?

I get a decent amount of spam sent to my Gmail account but it always seems to go to the spam folder, I rarely ever see a spam message in my inbox. I get hundreds of spam messages in my hotmail inbox on the other hand. Does Gmail use their own filtering algorithms or are they using commerical spam filtering software?

I'm quite sure it's proprietary. It works amazingly well - I have never had it filter out a non-spam message, and have received only a handful of spam messages in my Inbox. I've used gmail for my primary and secondary accounts for years.

ocassionally I get spam that passes through for a few days.. then eventually the filters learn it. I've had two false positives though (but I've yet to come across anything that has been perfect either way).

for me, the spam filter has worked perfectly. never gave my email but they still got it. of course most of those are the viagra ones, but so far it's been perfect.

I think it works so well as any spam that gets through to your inbox, you can click 'report spam' - Enough people do this, and that email is blacklisted. Add this, to an already good program to sift though all the other emails and you have a good quality spam filter.

Go Gmail!
