None of the yahoo's here have tried it and I'm thinking about picking some up for New Year's. What makes it so special? I've had Asti and Tosti, but that's about as far as my experience with this sort of stuff goes.

you should probably read some reviews to make sure its a good year before you plop down $130 + for Dom or cristal.
If you're not a champagne drinker, then don't waste the money.
I've had it a couple of times. It's good, but in my opinion, not worth the cost.
you can pick up moet and Chandon for a lot less (30-40 / bottle ? I think?). It's a good compramise between the chep stuff and dom.

its not worth it. i've had a variety of champagne in the last few years, and by far, my favorite is still veuve cliquot. it's only about 40 a bottle. its worth every penny.

anyways, I'll agree with some of these other posters who say that its probably not worth the price.
The thing with me though is that with all food/wines that are expensive, you can't really say its not worth the price until you've tried it.
You might buy a 30 to 40 dollar bottle this time that is really really good but you'll always wonder whether the Dom or Cristal could have been better.
So you might as well plot down 100 + , drink it down, and then say "that was good, but not worth the price".
Try it once. It is better. At my student income, not worth the money.
Try Veuve Cliquot or some other halfway decent Champagne first, so you have a basis of comparison.

Call me uncultured... but I've had all the fancy champanges and I'll take a $3 bottle of spumante sparkling wine anyday of the week! I love that stuff.
I like White Star myself and it's what I usually get when I have occasion to celebrate. Those times are few and far between of course but I really think it's noticeably better than the usual champagne. I'm planning on trying Dom sometime, but it's got to be a very special occasion. Our first child is on the way, so the day may be rapidly approaching. However, if I didn't enjoy champagne, I wouldn't even bother spending $100+ on a bottle.

The stuff is less than $100 a bottle at Costco; not sure if they up the prices around new years.
I'd go with Moet, it's cheaper and tastes just as good. I mean the '96 Dom is cheap and it tastes pretty good. But I like the Moet better. White Star is the best if you don't wanna drop a lot of money.
I was at a winery in Long Island, NY where they make good champagne (or sparkling wine). When I went to purchase the bottle, being that it was two weeks before New Years and that I was relatively young in appearance, the man in charge of Champagne production (whose tour I had just been on) made me promise that I wasn't going to drink it in a drunken stupor during New Years, otherwise, he would refuse to sell it to me. Naturally I promised to drink his Champagne in a respectful manner and coughed up the $25 for the bottle.
Regardless, as it was explained to me, good champagne has a different sort of carbonation which happens naturally as the Champagne ages for a few years and while the bottle is rotated by hand during the process. The cheap stuff is injected w/ carbonation.
Oh and naturally, I drank it for New Years.
