What does "body only" mean to you?

Just now I called off a Craigslist transaction - to purchase a D750 "body only" for $1450, because the seller's idea of 'body only' was the bare body of the camera - no battery, battery charger, strap, or anything else. I have seen 'body only' offers everywhere, and they essentially mean 'no lens included'. The rest of the stuff has always been included, even for used cameras.

While I found his take surprising, I also wondered how he managed to get this camera with nothing else. He claimed he bought it from B&H like that, because he has the D810 and he shared the battery, the charger and what-not from that. And he says "I don't use straps". I asked him if he'd reduce the price, but of course he would not. By then I was already walking from the whole thing as it started to smell funny.

I had been talking to him for a week since he posted. At first he said he was selling because he's a professional photographer, a Canon guy, and had tried this D750 out but could not manage the change to Nikon. Days later he's talking about his D810!

Used D750s on Amazon (from 6th Avenue Express, and others) are selling near the $1500 point, with everything included (but the lens) as in a new piece; I was hoping to do a hands-on check by buying locally; guess I'll wait a bit.

"Body Only" means body only.
"No Lens Included" means no lens included.

Craigslist is garbage, and has been for many years.
Next time I recommend refurbished from Amazon. If you get screwed, they will always give you a refund and then go after the salesman themselves, leaving you free to enjoy your hobby.

Buying new, body only means you get everything but a lens.

Buying used off craigslist -- hell, that's the wild west.

I've bought loads of camera gear off Craigslist without issue - typically, people are eager to photograph all the bits as a package to make it look like you're getting a lot.

You could go to BH and look at used bodies and see what the listing says is included.

It's an ambiguous description, good to ask for clarification like you did. If it's not satisfactory, don't buy it.

On the other hand, new battery may not be a bad idea since they do wear out over time. I sell regularly on Craigslist but would never buy from.

I checked - and have not found one single online store that sells a camera without the battery / charger! Maybe Ebay, but I don't go there.

I have bought past gear off Craigslist and have not suffered at all; maybe because I have stayed on the side of suspicious-till-it-checks-out.

But I guess I am better off staying with Amazon's marketplace for my peace of mind, particularly with a large-cost item.

Maybe he is telling the truth. Maybe not and it is a stolen camera body. To me, body only means no lens, but I expect everything else that comes with the BO package from the retailer to be included in the sale. If he is keeping the battery, strap, etc for whatever reason, I'd expect that to be reflected in the price.

Yes, he offered to 'bring all the stuff I have just for you to test'. That was the point I realized he was offering the camera to me sans battery!

I guess I'm better off buying off Amazon - I get everything from the box to the software CD; some of them even claim to have zero shutter actuations! Now if I can only somehow ascertain which of those sold on amazon marketplace (used /refurbished) are genuine US models (ie, not gray market)...

IIRC only the ones actually sold by amazon carry the full US warranty. Why not buy from B&H? They usually include nice bundles for the same price. When I ordered my 6D from B&H, I got a nice camera bag, a monopod, an extra battery, and a 16GB SD card for free

hmm, retails for $2K. If you're buying one for $1500, chances are it is not a US version.

Um, I thought the $500 drop reflected the 'used' status, not because it's a non-US version...?

Any good way to find out if a camera is US version or grey? I understand Nikon USA refuses to repair any non-US version?
