Bavarian Motor Works.

It was founded and heavily used to build airplanes, then cars.

It almost got shut down by council becuase it supplied hitler's Air Force.

Eh?

BMW's best production engine is probably their 3.0 or 3.2 litre inline-6. It has won many awards. For a great site on BMWs, check out www.roadfly.com.

51% of BMW is owned by the German Quandt family. I believe it is the 10th richest family in the world. The oldest living member of the Quandt family, think her name is Johanna, is the second-richest woman on the planet, second only to the Queen of England.

It actually does not stand for Bavarian Motor Works. That's only. what we English-speaking people call it. The company name is Bayerische Motoren Werke.

GagHalfrunt:

German: Bayerische Motoren Werke
English translation: Bavarian Motor Works

So, technically the company name is in German, but the English translation has the same acronym.

Good cars.

I've owned four "Bay Em Vay" as the Germans pronouce the acronym. All used. And one BMW motorcycle. Also used.

Personally, I'm fonder of the older models. 1600-2002 series.
