I visit a site talking about a certain medical problem I'm researching and it mentions a "bi-weekly" series of injections. I go, "does that mean twice a week or every two weeks?"

seriously? I thought biweekly was twice a week, and bimonthly was twice a month (aka once every two weeks)

I figure once every two weeks. First thing I think of when I hear that word.

I would assume twice a week.

Most docs will write the time period very specificaly on the script. I'm more accustomed to seeing daily meds, but some arthritis meds are twice a week.

Ask your doc if you're confused. They will be the endallbeall in your situation.

You see? It's one of those goddamn words you're not sure of. So, I go to the dictionary, right? And what do I get? Two mutually exclusive defintions.

I'm starting to favor the every two week definition, but it's not a slam dunk.

Both. Same with bimonthly.

So, I guess the moral of the lesson is never use that stupid "bi" prefix. State your meaning in no uncertain terms.

I still stand by my "biweekly = every two weeks" and "semiweekly = twice a week"

Why?

Stores advertise "Semi-Annual Sales" - These occur twice a year. Replace "annual" with "week" and it's twice a week.

And biannually is twice a year.

Then how come we have biannual celebrations in my area and they only occur on odd years (2003, 2005, 2007)?
