The BFG was the ultimate weapon in Doom. And yes, it stands for big farking gun. Man, I feel old.

He knows what it means in terms of gaming, I assume.
He was meaning specific to the company BFG. IE: He thinks the company may be named after the gun.
Unless that's what you were confirming, but you just seemed to be confirming that BFG from Doom just meant what it means.

BFG also was a name of a giant in a children's book by Roald Dahl. BFG = Big Friendly Giant.

I really doubt it stands for the Big Friendly Gun in Doom though.

:shocked:First time I saw "BFG" was in Doom (or was it perhaps Wolfenstein-3D? No, I'm pretty sure it was Doom) when I stumbled across the BFG9000 in a secret room or some such place. A Big F------ Gun it was indeed and there was much rejoicing all around. (some said at the time that the F meant "fragging" -- yeah, sure...)

I'm not quite sure I understand what your question is though. Are you asking what the origin of "BFG" is, or if BFG - the company - are named after this much coveted device?

I came across the BFG in both Doom and Quake 2. Since BFG is a video card maker, I doubt that the name is a coincidence. In fact, I think it was a great marketing idea since most gamers know what the BFG stands for and the word f***ing is in the name. Of course, the company can't come out and make a reference to Doom or Quake 2 because they probably don't want to risk getting sued by ID for copyright infringement (a very iffy case, IMHO).

this reminds my of the debates i used to have with my doom playing friends about the bfg9000. ahh. that was good times. good times...

sry if i sounded confusing! 😱 i meant the latter.

haha..the BFG was in Quake 3 as well. It was in a couple of the deathmatch maps and q3ctf4 (space map). Most server admins took it out of the map though. 🙁
