What does asthma feel like?

Allergies have killed me the past few weeks. Now that I am getting over the sneezing and stuffy nose, I've developed a cough.

The coughing is almost gone (I still have fit or two at night) but I noticed something incredibly strange for me. Doing any sort of activity whatsoever is knocking the wind out of me. For example, after taking a shower this morning, I was so winded, I called out of work to lay down.

I walked my dog 2x today, and both times I got so winded, I couldn't speak an entire sentence without gasping for air. Takes about 10-15 minutes for me to finally start breathing normally again.

WTF? My brother is an asthmatic, and this is almost how his asthma attacks were. I remember him being winded enough not to speak, which is where I am right now.

I never had any asthma my whole life, can allergies give it to you? I felt like I was going to die this morning...lol. Usually, despite being fat, I am very active during the day, and have pretty good endurance. Now I can't walk up a single flight of stairs...what the hell...

Take a breath and hold it......now without releasing your breath, try and take another one....hard eh?, asthma!

I've had asthma since I was about 1, and that sounds like asthma to me.

It's the Jesus choke, nice hot black coffee can help. Go see your doctor, have him listen, and he'll be happy to give you a long list of asthma control medications.

PS It could also be bronchitis from your recent illness.

I hope it's just temporary. Despite everything, I am actually really active at work. I don't know how I'll be able to move around tomorrow. I run around a 250 acre park doing support!

Gonna be doing a lot of remote desktopping tomorrow. 🙂

Coffee really helps me, a few summers ago my asthma was acting up and I didn't have health insurance, so I'd have to wake up at around 4 in the morning to drink a cup of coffee, just so I could breathe enough to go back to sleep. I had to keep doing this for about a month until I could get scheduled into the poor-person clinic. The day of my appointment came just in time, as I could take short gasps. I got a shot of steroids to the ass and a nebulizer treatment, and I was good to go.

Go talk to your doctor ASAP and get him to take a listen to your chest. If it's asthma they'll figure it out pretty quick. If it's not, it sounds like you're sick as a dog and could use some help.

Got some time off Monday, if I don't feel better by then, I am going to go. If I get much worse anytime this week, I will go asap. My doctors office is just down the block from me, so it's no big deal to go visit. If I feel like crap after work tomorrow, I am going to head to him immediately.

I am definitely concerned at this point.

If it's asthma and it can hit you this hard it's likely you're going to need to keep a rescue inhaler around. I've got asthma, it almost never bothers me but when it does it hits me like a ton of bricks. Mine gets kicked off by my allergies, mostly to cats.

It's weird but I couldn't take in more than half a breath of air. It was like my lung capacity was limited somehow.

I have asthma - and while there's some feeling of diminished capacity, there's also a big component of restriction in how quickly you can breathe in.

Critical here - if you actually think your lung capacity is limited, it's possible you've got pneumonia. If you breathe in as much as you can but it doesn't feel like a normal full volume of air, then go get yourself x-rayed. Seriously.

I have chronic spring allergies that generate a TON of drainage; have all my life. I just dealt with the season every year, but at around 28, the drainage/cough developed into pneumonia.

After about 5-10 minutes I can breathe properly again. Wouldn't it last longer if I had pneumonia? Also, I am not coughing up anything but really clear liquid, and very little at that.

Allergies can absolutely develop asthma if left untreated until ~middle age. It all depends on your allergies and whatever sinus issues you may have.

Are you actually diagnosed with allergies, or do you just have allergy-like symptoms?

I ask, b/c I had allergies my whole life--Mom had severe allergies (yep, also developed asthma), as I always had the symptoms. Turns out, going into allergy clinic only last year (lol), I have zero allergies. Vasomotor Rhinitis. presents exactly like allergies, but it's neural instead of immunological. antihistamines also work as treatment.

odd.

The two times in my lifetime I've taken the "scratch" test, it's never shown anything. I just recently started developing allergies about 2 years ago (this is my 3rd year.)

It's funny, when I look at my attendance history at work from 2 years ago, April/May is the only time I ever use sick days. I have ~240 hours or so in sick days, so it's no big deal.
