What does a university-bound student buy for his dorm? (e.g. tell me a nice blender to buy)

I have a light meal plan, so I'll be making some simple foods in my dorm, which I will share with two other guys. By that I mean the dorm and not the food if I can help it.

In the kitchen, I'll probably need to buy a blender, rice cooker, kettle, and toaster (another guy is bringing a microwave). I need help with things like certain brands or models that are reliable. Well, maybe the kettle not so much, since all I need is for it to boil water, but there're so many different kinds of blenders and I need something with enough power to crush ice easily.

I'm not really sure what else I'll need for the other rooms. I have no idea what I'm currently taking for granted so I don't know what I'll be missing in my bathroom or bedroom.

I'm sure many of you have been in the same situation before so feel free to share what you thought was useful to you when you lived on campus.

All you need is a rice cooker and kettle. You won't be using the other stuff because either you will be too lazy to buy food or too lazy to clean it.

This man speaks the truth. I'll also add a microwave to that.

your dorm room/suite has a dedicated kitchen? Man, that would have been nice! My dorm rooms were a little 9x15 box with 2 beds, 2 dressers etc. We had a very small microwave/freezer/fridge which would barely hold leftovers from eating out.

Anyway, my advice is to take 1/2 the stuff you actually think you need. If you still need it after a month or so of living there then bring it/buy it then. 99.9% of the time I either ate out or in the dorm cafeteria.

Microwave and fridge.

Look at the pile of stuff you're taking, and cut it in half. Seriously. Anything you look at and think "well maybe I won't use this...", you won't. It'll make moving out next spring much easier.

All you need is the rice cooker, the microwave and a toaster.

Rice cooker can also work as a steamer/boiler.

microwave, rice, toaster.

And this too: 1 plate, 1 set of silverware, and 1 bowl. Thats it, if you have 10 of each, no dishes will ever get done.

Fair enough. Maybe I'm overthinking some things.

Still though, I really want a blender. I go to the gym a lot (I'm skinny, have lots of time, so I might as well) and I end up spending $5 on a simple protein shake afterwards that usually contains a single banana. It'd be nice if I could make it myself. I used to work at a place where I had to blend drinks so I have some experience. The blender we have at home is really poor though and difficult to use. So throw me a bone here, help me buy a blender.

Edit: Right, a mini-fridge. A bunch of people I know have one or will have one in their dorm. Any recommendations there? I could rent one, but it's about as expensive to rent for the year as it costs to buy one.

The kitchen comes with a fridge, oven, and stove. If I end up getting a mini-fridge, it'll be for my bedroom so I can drink while doing homework (lol) a.k.a. lurking ATOT.

Blender will be a PITA to clean. Just get a shaker and eat the banana separate.

The one I linked above is very easy to clean. One-piece jar so you don't have to clean the blade seperately and what not. I just put in some water, a drop of dish soap, and blend it for like 5 seconds.. then rinse it out.

I guess I'm used to old school blenders. :)

agreed.
my family grew up using rice cookers, and now we just use pots... same thing.

i'd say the only benefit of the rice cooker is that it has an automatic cooking timer, and it can keep your rice warm. Worth the extra cost and space? up to you to decide.
