What does a SONIC BOOM sound like?
I live next to Moffet Field in Sunnyvale, CA and there is an airshow there and I hear all these loud noises when planes pass by and like its so damn loud...

Imagine an ice block the size of a football field violently cracking.

Hahaha that's a good way to describe it actually.

When a jet breaks the sound barrier it is very very loud, kinda like a large crack, perhaps and extremely loud whipcrack.

When Space Shuttle's have landed over at Edwards AFB (80-90 miles away as the crow flies, and the San Gabriels as a buffer in-between), I've heard one, or two dull "BOOMs", usually accompanied by a good, very short shaking of the house. :)

I'll say this:

Last year, a loud BOOM was heard aroud my town. It sounded like an underwater explosion; a very large underwater explosion, or maybe a 10000 square foot piece of steel being dropped onto concrete. Nobody knew what it was; it was heard in a 40 mile radius, and broke a few windows and some china. the popular rumor was that a plane had crashed in the woods behind the town, and the fuel tank had ruptured. Another popular theory was that a meteor had hit, as some people claimed seeing a "ball of fire and smoke" hit the ground. No one still has a definite explanation, but since it was never on the news, we can only assume it was a sonic boom.

My comparisn of a sonic boom to an ice block was because I watched a documentary on Discovery about a specially designed ship which is responsible for bringing supplies to the science team living at the North Pole. This ship/vessel/monster is called the Ice-Crusher because that is exactly what it does. It is capable of crushing ice which is 40 meters thick. The sound of ice of this magnitude breaking comes very close to a sonic boom.

The Shuttle frequently lands at Cape Canaveral.. ilive 20 miles south of the Cape..the sound is unbeleivable..first time I heard it was 300am woke me up sounded as if there was a large bomb going off...the entire house seems to shake..fear the windows are going to shatter last anywhere from 20 - 30 sec and boom is loud..you would swear military weapon exploded..
When a rocket or shuttle goes up the sound rumbles down to us...and can shake the windows even longer than when they land...just incredible

Sounds like "So-Nic Boom" and then a spinning ray hits you and can cause damage unless you press back and block it.

Yeah, evidently you can cause one by mimicking a very quick bear-hug to the air in front of you. :D

I think the most interesting thing about breaking the speed of sound is an effect called "control reversal".

As you cross the threshold of the speed of sound, your controls suddenly reverse (ie. pull back on the stick and go DOWN.). It has claimed more than its fair share of pilots...

Just a little interesting tidbit I thought y'all may want to know.
