What does a fried CPU look like?

Typically it will look like one of two things:

1) Exactly like a normal, functioning CPU.

2) Like a normal functioning CPU that has been set on fire.

I had an Athlon 900 which burned up because I didn't put the heatsink on right and after the smoke came out, it looked like a functioning CPU but it had the thermal paste all over the core since I guess it got so hot that the paste melted all over the CPU.
