what does a "dive" bar mean?

It used to mean the place was not somewhere you would take your gf. We always referred to a place as a "dive" when it was dark, run down and full of people that might stab you for the beer on your table. We also only went to a "dive" if we were looking to score a bag of weed. No idea what it means now.

Yeah "dive" used to really mean a rundown crappy place. THe new version of dive seems to mean a place that just looks rundown and crappy, but really is just part of their appeal.

They're usually in a "bad" part of town...they usually look crappy....and they usually have cheap beer. Forget getting any fashionable drinks. And your beer choices are usually limited to Bud/Miller/Coors.

this is the bar you go to after you have blown all your money at the titty bar and other nicer bars...

its run down, dirty, stinks you probably should fear for your life while you are there but it has cheap beer that will make your last 10 bucks last for a long time....

my favorite bar around here is a "dive". Beer is $.75 (for a 10 once) and DD gets to drink pop for free all night. The food is great they have the best burgers around. they also have 2 pool tablesm, ping pong, shuffleboard and a few dart boards. oh yeah and 3 diffrent golf games.

The owners are some a brother and sister. they can be some of the meanest people if deserved. But i been going there for over 10 years. heck i get at least 3 beers free when i go!

edit: ohh on tuesdays they have $.50 beer and $2 hamburgers on thursdays they have $1 shots and $3 mixed drinks! woot!

It's not really a dive bar unless there are 50 year old plus regulars in there drinking from noon to 5pm and unionized construction workers drinking from 3pm to 6pm and an assortment of students, working stiffs, hipsters, bikers, and people looking for anonymity while drinking for the rest of the time.
