What does a "critical introduction" include?

Have to write on final stupid paper tonight but the prof. decided to ask for a "critical introduction" essay about a novel. Do you think a "critical introduction" essay should give away plot and/or assume any prior knowledge of the book being discussed.

I think basically you can't assume the audience has read the book. That's what I'm guessing.
