Pop stars, actors and actresses, etc, what do their managers actually do? Similar to E's character on Entourage, I guess, but I can't really name anything he does besides relay messages between Vince and Ari.

Agents (like Ari) get jobs. Managers keep them from fucking things up so they don't lose said job

So the agent finds work, but the manager decides what work to take? Anything else besides that? I don't see how that can be a full time job.

i'm not too familiar with celebrities since i don't watch TV.

But - i listen to pro-surfing. for example, Kelly Slater's manager -

* pounds on the table at contract negotiation time.
* helps Kelly when he ends up at a police station in Israel,
after the paparazzi chase him when he exits a hotel in Tel
Aviv at 6 o'clock in the morning, and he tells them to get
the camera out of his face.
* helps him manage an extremely complex schedule
* probably helps him remember friends' birthdays.

basically takes care of all the business & logistics stuff so
he can relax and try to win and give Cameron Diaz surfing lessons.

i think he punched the guy's camera or something.

it's not typical for a manager to only have one client, is it?

they make sure the celeb is making money so that they can collect their 15% or whatever they get
like a PR or marketing dept. try to build the "brand" to get them more famous to make more money so they can get a bigger cut

I would think that keeping track of the details is a big part of the job.

If you?re a star you don?t want to spend all your time keeping track of interviews and parties, you just want to have fun and chase skirts.

A celeb has a publicist, a personal assistant, and an agent. So what does the manager do? I guess negotiate contracts and keep his ass in line with business in mind. The manager's office usually is where mail and all the contacts stuff is handled also.

E doesn't really have an office or other clients (until recently) so it just seems like he doesn't do a whole lot but answer Vince's phone, when he's standing right next to him.

Exactly. They handle the business end of things so the celebrity can focus on doing their job.

They could do everything from "Personal Assistant" roles to "Talent Agent" roles, and much in between.
