What does a broken stripe mean?

Recently I got a failure of my RAID array due to a broken stripe. I had two Maxtor 40.9GB 7200RPM Hard drives in RAID 0 mode when one day when I went to turn on my computer I recieved an error saying that I had a broken stripe. I have a HighPoint 370 RAID controller card on my KT7A-RAID board. My two hard drives are the same model, one of them I've had since August 2000 and the second I've had since January 2001. Could the broken stripe that killed my RAID 0 array be a sign of hard drive about to die, or could it be something caused by beta HPT drivers I was trying out. Right now I am using both hard drives, but not in RAID mode, regular IDE instead, performed a system surface scan on all of my partitions and nothing bad turned up. Im baffled by this error, any insight is appreciated. Thanks

The great subject that nobody in two different forums could answer. Looks like nobody is tough enough to handle this problem

Sounds like nothing more than a corrupted stripe. What may be a fixable error with a single drive can be death to RAID array. That's the risk you take running RAID 0.

It's likely not phsyical damage to the drive.

But rather like Pariah said, it's just a corrupted sector on the hard drive. You have to remember that RAID0 arrays are highly prone to data loss. It's very easy to disturb them and have them crap out on you.
