What do you wear to a symphony?

I've never been before, and will be going tomorrow night. :) I know jeans and a t-shirt probably aren't the best idea, but how formal do you have to dress?

Has anyone been to the symphony in Los Angeles before?

Semi-formal attire is probably the best idea, so you don't look like a bum and out of respect for the performers. Nothing too fancy, but something nicer than everyday clothes.

Dress. Even if they're nice pants probably too casual.

As long as it's tasteful, it'll be fine. Either pants or a dress would work. Just keep it "civilized".

It's really up to you, some people come in their Sunday best, others in dress casual. If you're there for the music more than to show off then pants and a nice blouse should be fine.

Some people treat the symphony like church or a civic ritual of some sort, but the musicians are there to play music and for the audience to enjoy that music, just like at any other concert.

if its to like the dorothy conservatory or LA Performing arts center, I'd recomment going all black, and formal.

Formal. Definitely formal. Wear whatever is the female equivalent to a man's dark suit or tux.

You can make the evening into anything you want. Opera and symphonies no longer have the formal code they once did. I prefer casual. Never feel out of place.

You need to wear your "little black dress" that all women are suppose to have.

I don't wear a full-on suit, usually just slacks + a shirt & tie, with a black wool jacket over it if it's cold.
