What do you usually do to figure out which book to read next?

Just wondering if you guys read reviews or check out bestseller lists or just randomly browse bookstores or websites looking for something to read.

I don't trust bestseller lists, btw.

I usually check the local public library bestseller/recommended read list. If a popular book is not available (usually a long hold list), I get the e-book (pdf, epub) version on transfer it to the HP TouchPad/Arnova 10b I have.

Grab a bunch of books that look interesting from the library. Start to read. Discard crappy ones until I hit one I like.

that's generally what I do. However I do read often enough to look for specific authors I like as well as reading reviews. I usually peruse until I find a book that catches my attention.

Since I've read everything I want to read off of all the science fiction lists I can find on the web, I usually just sample stuff on my kindle until I hit something I like.

This. I pick a subject I'm interested in and then download several samples from Amazon and read them to find the best book.

I don't read much anymore, but whatever I can get cheap/free. I like the discount section at B&N, thrift shops, and Project Gutenberg. The last full price book I got was The Elegant Universe. There's too much good old stuff to worry about new stuff.

1. Use various websites and tools to find new/interesting books by genre and/or date
2. Keep a look out for new stuff by authors I have read in the past
3. My finely tuned Amazon recommendations that pick up on the hundreds of books I buy each year:D

I look at which course is next in my current designation program.

Seriously, between grad school a couple of years back and now professional designations I haven't read a book for fun since 2005.

I give Amazon recommendations a look, but pass on at least 90% of them. After reading some huge number (a couple of thousand?) SF & Fantasy novels over the last two decades it's hard to find something new that I like.

It's like network television -- the plots on the cop and lawyer shows are all too familiar. That's one reason I watch anime, at least it's a new set of cliches.
