To convert mpeg digital television to a format that uses less disk space? what is your preference?

Haven't settled on a format yet. I want to use h.264 and an encoder that supports multiple CPU's though, I think..

Edit: Especially since 24 starts in a week, and each hour will take 4-8gb of space before cutting commercials. :)

I just wanna compress a few Dr Phil episodes, so I guess the quality doesn't have to be top notch

xvid.. so i can play it on my modded xbox soon. using gordian knot for my movies, virtual dub otherwise.

i want to continue to use autogk, but it uses xvid 1.1... i don't know what to do to drop it back to 1.0, or if that would even work. it's such a nice one click program for the most part.
