wasd+mouse.. i use thumb button to jump though
using a joystick or controller will just get you killed online.

But it's easier to reach more keys, which you may need for most FPS's. I started on arrow keys when FPS's first started, but since then it's been necessary to use WASD.

Only if oyu have a 2 button mouse and small hands.
if oyu have extra mouse buttons and/or larger hands, then arrow keys give you almost 20 buttons that are usable in addition to movement, and TBH if you need more than 20 buttons, the game is getting stupid (if it's an FPS).

No, most likely your W is slightly offset to the left of your S, not in a direct line above it.

I have 5 buttons on my mouse, I'm 6'6 w/ big hands and I still use WASD.
For example, here is BF2

WASD = Movement
Shift = Jump
Space = Crouch
Z = Prone
E = Use
R = Reload
Q,T,Y = Radio Commands
J,K,L = Talk Commands
Mouse 1 = Fire
Mouse 2 = Secondary Fire
Scroll Wheel = Change Weapons
Mouse 4 = Ventrilo Chat
Mouse 5 = Sprint
X = Parachute
C, V = Some Stuff I don't remember

Even Quake1 made use of WASD:
Q = Shaft
E = Railgun
Mouse 3 = GL
Mouse 2 = RL
Z = Current Location
X = Quad MSG
C = Pent MSG

I had a bunch of other messages that I don't remember too.

WASD + mouse.

Q is always set to switch between primary/secondary weapons in games that have them. R is always reload, CTRL is always crouch (if applicable), space is always jump. TAB is always set to show score.

Good old classic CS defaults, wherein lies my FPS roots.

I use a Nostromo N52 Speedpad and Logitech G7 mouse (inverted). I picked up on inverting my mouse from being used to flight sims. I always recommend to people to try the Nostromo speedpads. I got hooked on them with the N50 and I think that they really are convenient and feel more ergonomic than your standard keyboard.

I can reach in a circle to the M key with my left hand and still move with the arrows. That's way more keys than I need.

Can you hit the M key while strafing diagnolly, jumping and firing a gun?

WSAD and mouse. controller is to hard to aim well with. I hate when I want to reload and hit talk instead!

Same here. I had to change to WASD after I was dying too much cause I was fumbling around trying to find a key.
