Integrated Radeon Xpress 1100 will not play CSS or Q4 except maybe at 640x480.

Not to mention bottom of the barrel Acer has really poor quality. You really won't get a budget gaming machine except for around $1000.

i'm not really going to game on this. i have a gaming rig at home. if you turn off vertex lighting in q4, you would be surprised what video card can run it. i'm not really buying it to game but thought i would throw it in there since i might try to game on it.

but for the money do you think it's a decent deal?

Yes, I would. I've heard that the 3000 line is okay, so long as you're not moving it around a lot.

If you can afford it, try to find something with a X1600 or 7300. The performance difference is night and day.

X1600 is something like twice as powerful as a 7300. For modern gaming, you want an X1600 or 7600. Minimum would be an X1400/7400, but you'd have to turn some settings down.

i would spend $800 get something with a dedicated video card, core duo processor, and 1gb. i know you'll be adding your own 512mb but it may not be the same thing your laptop comes with. so basically what i'm suggesting is spend $150 more for a dedicated video card and dual core processor.

i'm not sure but i think the 7200 would serve as a better card than the Xpress 1100...anyone else able to confirm this?

if you could, try getting a 14" laptop. they're a lot more portable

I just bought a new laptop which includes a centrino duo. Its great and all but I have 512mb and intel intergrated 950gm. I tried css, and it ran like ******. I was running it in dx7 and when I did the stress test I got around 50fps. When you play online with people you go down to 15 to 10fps. That is very unplayable in css. Imagine how a celeron with half the memory. I dont even know if it would be able to open. I couldn't even open up css without setting it to dx7.

I think he means that that one will probably last longer, and is of better quality. For you that may not be too important, my friend has an acer laptop and the battery life sucks, but its a good machine. Personally im looking at the compaq v3000 series. The 14 inch screen may be a little smaller than your looking for, but i configured it with a core solo processor, 512mb memory, screen and finish upgrades for about 600 after rebate (with the college discount). Ive read fairly good things about the HP era Compaqs, maybe you should look into them.

yea i think he means build quality...plus, it has a $200 rebate so it costs $385AR. add 2x512mb and he'll probably be around $485. still significantly cheaper, the only thing is it doesn't have a dvd burner (why would he be burning dvds on the laptop if he has a desktop though?) and comes with 20gb less storage capacity...he could always add a hard drive later though
