A Dell 8600

P-M 1.8 GHZ Dothan
512 MB Ram
DVD/CDRW
64MB GeforceGo5200
40GB HD

$1450 plus tax

I could change the CPU to 1.6 Dothan and the Video card to 128 MB Radeon 9600 for the same price. Which do you think would be best.

If you're gonna game, go for the 9600, the 5200 is rubbish (believe me, I know, I have one in this Insipron 5150), the CPU speed won't make too much difference.

What screen size/resolution do you have, as for me, I'd get the highest resolution I could possibly get (this screen is 1600x1200 on a 15" panel, and I love it)

Its really good, so look into that. or even the higher resolution one...

Also... as Confused said.. 5200 SUX.

how is the GeForce for non-gaming applications (ie: watching movies)? does it make a difference?

I would recomend going for the 9600 w/ 128mb over the 5200 any day. Unless all you are doing is talking on aim, writing papers in word, and surfing the net, I would have to say the vid card is a great upgrade. You'll probably want to play the occasional game once and a while, and the 9600 will let you do this. Also, if you go with a high resolution display the video processor becomes even more important. I would definitely go with a better gpu/vpu and a higher resolution screan over a .2ghz faster chip any day of the week.

Sorry if I'm being a bother, but where did you find that deal? That looks like a really good price for that configuration. I'm looking into getting a laptop within the next week for school and have been shopping around for a good deal. Thanks :)

Got it from the Dell Web site. But the deal is over. A bad thing about dell is that they change their prices every day about. I don't mean little changes, I mean major changes in price everyday.
