what do you think the pH reading is in your mouth right now

moshquerade

No Lifer
we all recently, at a dental ed course, used some pH paper orally and the results of our saliva's pH was interesting.

do you think your saliva is on the acidic or alkaline side?

I would guess alkaline. Since you swallow so much saliva, a slightly alkaline ph would somewhat neutralize stomach acid that makes it into the esophagus.

Is that before or after a can of soda?
But I would probably guess it's more on the alkaline side like most of the human body.

Got one of those tests in a magazine recently and it indicated that my saliva is well on the acidic side.

obviously soda would skew the results 😉

i am talking about, just sitting there, not having anything to eat or drink.

Acidic....then again I just had a subway with oil/vinegar on it...

well, you're right, even w/o subway. most of us have acidic saliva which is made worse with stress and what we eat/drink. acidic saliva promotes the bacteria that cause cavities and plaque. so we need to neutralize our saliva.

a few people did have alkaline saliva, and surprise, they didn't have any cavities/fillings in their mouths. which stands to reason.

so, to get your saliva back into the safe zone you can try eating some xylitol (pure stuff, not the 2% stuff you get in some gums). it doesn't allow harmful acid loving bacteria to flourish b/c it changes your mouth back to alkaline.

3 continuing education credits, and for once, some really useful info.

Also being more alkaline in general lowers the risk of cancer, but thats besides the fact.
If your healthy though it will be alkaline, wait but im unhealthy... so mines probably acid. Boo

i can't agree that being healthy is only measured by the alkalinity of your saliva. i am perfectly healthy, as far as i know and as far as i feel, and my saliva is acidic.

another interesting thing, bottled water will acidify your mouth too. the pH paper doesn't lie.

Isn't the whole purpose of saliva to start the breakdown process of whatever you ingest which would mean it has to be slightly acidic normally?

If you're eating metal then sure, otherwise you'd want a base.

Its not only measured by that but it can reflect in it, depending on the illness.
If someone has cancer for instance their saliva will likely be highly acidic, at least according to some stuff. Erm using an extreme example...

I'm pretty sure bases can do the same thing. Lye is a strong base and it burns flesh like acid.

It's not because of acid or base, but because of enzymes.
