What do you think of WMP 9?

I tunes is a very nice product. After much use however, I like wmp9 more.

From the fact that it supports 24bit 96khz (24/96) wma's using the dpoweramp encoder to the nice layout and playlist management, I can't see myself liking itunes more.

One question i did have though, of which I am sure about with itunes.

Conversion: can wma automatically convert files to a certain bitrate when transfering to wma/mp3 CD or portable device?

One of my main deterents concering the purchase of an IPOD and itunes is the fact that you just "copy" the music.

Transcoding would be essential to any player I would buy. For example, my Minidisc player, although using somewhat antiquated technology, still transcodes mp3, wma's , and wav's into atrac3, regardless of how crappy the bundled software is. This proves very useful, as it allows me to keep my high bitrate lossy and lossless music the way it is, and still take my tunes with me.

How about wma portable players? (dell jukebox, iriver etc...) Do they, or does their software/wmp9 allow for automatic transcoding to a lower bitrate of wma or mp3?

Thanks

WMP9 is the best player out there if you need an all-in-one (rip/play/burn) solution. I love it.
I highly recommend Red Chair software's solutions for all the popular DAPs. They have a transcoding feature that works great. For example, I have all my music stored on my server as lossless WMA9. When I dock my Karma, RioRad syncs my music collection and downsamples music transferred to the Karma to 160kbps CBR WMA9. Works like a charm.

The software will also transcode across formats as long as you have installed the proper encoder (lame, ogg encoder, etc)

FYI, here's redchair's site:

I also cannot say enough good things about my Rio Karma. I recommend it to anyone looking for a HD based DAP. Check out the features for the price, it can't be beat.

Slicker interface, playlist improvements, seems to run faster on my PC than 9 or 8 did. I haven't been using it long, about a month, but I like it more and more everyday.

ASsuming you are serious, why do you like it better?
nevermind, after googling, looks like I'm behind the times...
interesting that this has been kept kind of quiet. I see it's mainly reported as being part of MCE2005 though...

He's not serious. 😛

Yes, I am, quite serious. When I get home, I'll post a screenshot of it.

Edit: Nope, not running longhorn. XP Pro. I have my sources 🙂

I thought it was only available as part of MCE2005 beta or something....I didn;t know it was standalone right now....

mind explaining how the playlists are better?

I must admit, I went apesh!t the day intunes came out, and was still enthused when the new 4.5 came out, but I got over it quickly. Although the interface is nice and all, wmp9 has more fatures which I USE.

Poll suck. You suck. Where the hell is winamp?

winamp is nice and clean. It is simple to use and somewhat customizable and plays a pllethora of formats.

A suitable all around music solution for my HTPC however, it is not.

Make sure you get a shot of the help>about screen, I bet it says 9.00.00.3409, even though it said 10 during install...

I haven't used WMP9 as Winamp works fine for me.

iTunes is worthless to me since it doesn't support .ogg or .ape files.

I think that it's just going to be an update to 9, and at one point they were going to make it 10. I'd still like to see pics of it if you've got the time, the beta has been yanked from everywhere I've looked.
