What do you think of when you think of overnight/1-day-air shipping type stuff?

I always think of overnight shipping as like some huge dramatic movie chase scene or something.

Red alert appears in the warehouse, "OVERNIGHT SHIPPING ALERT. ASUS MOTHERBOARD BLAHBLAHBLAH, SHIP TO 123 MAIN ST. NY, 10101." Sirens going off, red lights and shit. People are scrambling, "WHERE'S THE FUCKING ASUS MOTHERBOARDS?!!?!" They finally get it. Hurry to package it. Immediately throw it in a FedEx/UPS Ferrari 430 or some other supercar. Car races off to the airport. Already at the airport there is a fighter jet just waiting for the package to arrive, and then they just put the cargo in the cargo compartment of the jet... Jet scrambles off into the air. Goes over 1500mph to get across the nation. Going full throttle the whole way. No time to land at the airport... guy ejects the package that has the payload with a parachute over the UPS/FedEx local headquarters at a low altitude. Quickly it descends into the landing zone and they put it in their local delivery van and off it goes to your desired location in the city.

I could have made it more awesome, but I am hungry.

Anyway, that's what I think of when I think of overnight/1-day-air shipping.

Not really. Package gets sent to distrubtion center and then sent out on usually a cargo jet to the airport near the destination, a jet can cross the US in 4-5 hours at normal speeds. The packages then get sent to the local distrubtion center and then out on a truck. The shipping companies like UPS have this down to a science.

You are probably more thinking about something like UPS Express Critical.

That is like when you absolutely need a package to get somewhere ASAP. For example or or Dell Servers we have 4-hour parts. So basically after we get off the phone with the Dell tech they have 4-hours to get the parts to or location. Usually in this example Dell will have parts stockpilled at the major airports and a courier will drive the part out to or office. However if the part is not at the Dell Depot location then things get a little dicey. This is when litteraly you have next flight service where the next airplane going in that direction gets the part put in its cargo hold.

Actually, that's pretty funny. That's kind of how I envision overnight shipping as well :hmm:

My personal favorite is HP overnight shipping me a CMOS battery that failed in a workstation. And then they paid for shipping to send the bad one back.

I'm sure shipping on that was like 10x the actual cost of the part.

:)

I think it's a common thought. It has to be. We all think of overnight shipping as the ultra exciting version of shipping. Pretty sure of that.

WAITING FOR MY FUCKING HEADPHONES. UGGHHH I WANT THEM NOW. They've been out for delivery since 3:52AM! WTF?!

I had to send a contract early morning to deliver by 4 pm, and all I thought was "Wow, I just spent $30 to send a piece of paper".

What headphones did you get? Monster turbines?

Sennheiser HD 595. It's a step up from the 555s I had for a few years. (The wire broke. I didn't wanna pay for a new wire and tossed them. Bad move)

Everything is just on a conveyor belt, the overnight stuff splits off into a bin labeled "To Be Delivered" and the rest splits off into a bin called "To Be Held".
These shippers are so efficient now, what use is it giving the same service to the cheapskates when they can easily do overnight shipping for everything.

That has been my thought also. Both next day and 2-day go by air. I can see with ground there being a difference.

What do I think of? I think "Fuck... I just paid a lot for shipping"

I will say that overnight stuff always "amazes" me though. It's impressive feat I think when you can get a package cross country in sub 24hrs.

It's Christmas time you narcissistic jackass, give it an extra day.

No fucking way. I want it now. I ordered 2 day shipping, I demand 2 day shipping.

They give me an expected date of 12/22/2010, then I should get 12/22/2010.

Well guess what? The world doesn't revolve around you and not everything always goes to plan.

Oh, by the way, delivery standards generally don't include the day it was given to the postal service.

If I pay for something, I should get it. It shouldn't be like, "Oh, well, we'll do it whenever we care to. If we even care to." So shut the fuck up.

It was given next day... what are you on?

Oooh oooh ooh my name is trident, I'm not allowed to be inconvenienced. How dare UPS not experience a seasonal Christmas delay.

I think there is a cutoff time before overnight delivery is an available option, maybe like 4 pm EST. Some places pick, pack and ship it from the nearest distribution center that have the product. Or they cross stock products with another company that has them and ship it from there.

Case in point, I got a gift from my ATOT SS ordered from Newegg shipped from Bolingbrook, IL to Orland Park, IL (my location) via UPS. The location is not a Newegg DC, rather a hub of other electronic products companies. Cheaper shipping it from a place that has it locally and shipping it to you. They do this whenever possible to avoid shipping it cross country and obviously save on shipping cost. Same thing that I ordered on line as gifts and had it shipped to another place, always the nearest place or origin. It saves me the hassle of receiving it then shipping it again to my recipient.
