So...if the replacement MSI K7T Turbo mobo doesn't revive our old desktop, I want to use the existing Aopen HX08 case (300W PS) to house our desktop v2.0.

Keep in mind that this desktop is the wife's machine and we are trying to build something that will give us another ~8 years of service.

I plan on using the Zalman 7000cu heatsink for the processor...

Proposed parts list:

  • ASUS P5B-Plus LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
    $138.99

    GIGABYTE GV-NX85T256H GeForce 8500GT 256MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 HDCP
    $97.99

    Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6600 -
    $224.90

    mushkin eXtreme Performance 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996522 - Retail
    $107.99

    SONY 18X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write White E-IDE/ATAPI Model DRU830A - Retail
    $57.99
Subtotal: $627.86

Is the stock 300W power supply enough for these "modern" parts?

Thanks,

Paul

No offense, but I think its extremely unwise to cram those new parts into an old case with an ancient PSU.

You could pick any of the deals on this page, spend the same amount of money and get a computer with an LCD monitor for the same amount of money or less (and it would be a lot quieter too).

If you must build it yourself, you can put together a very nice *complete* Core 2 Duo machine for under $600.

Core 2 Duo E2160 - $85

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro - $19.50

Gigabyte 965P-DS3 Rev 1.3 - $94.99

Super Talent 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-667 - $56.86

Samsung 18X DVDRW W/ LightScribe - $32

Samsung 250GB SATA2 HDD - $63

Asus GeForce 8600GT Silent - $142

Antec NSK4400 W/ 380W PSU - $68

Total: $561.32 plus shipping/tax.

If you're not a gamer at all, you could lower the total by going with a cheaper video card. If you're not worried about DirectX10 compatibility, you can pick up a fast DirectX9 card for less money as well.

The CPU will overclock to E6600 speeds (2.4GHz) like it was born to do it (no voltage increase, just crank up the FSB). In fact, you can get the CPU up to 3GHz without even overclocking the memory (the CPU has a 9x multiplier, so a bus speed of 333MHz equals 3GHz). All the parts I listed are quality, from reputable vendors, and lean towards the quiet side.

I wouldn't use the old 300W PSU.

I'd go with jpeyton's build but would ditch the 8500GT if you don't game nor want H.264 decoding (watching HD content). If you do casually play some 3D games and/or want h.264 decoding, then the 8500GT is the card for the job... though, there are cheaper solutions, though they're more noisier ones, lol.

I would definately pick up another DVDR. Sony is overpriced IMO. The Samsung one is a better choice IMO. Eventho I have 3 Sony drives in my system I purchased 2 Samsungs to replace them, just havent had time to gut my system yet.
