HTC Dream G1 Android

$149.99 - for device on a 3 year contract

+

$45 - 150 anytime minutes, unlimited evenings after 9pm and weekends, 1000 messages, 500MB Data
$12 - call display, voicemail, whocalled (?), mobile backup (?)
$0.50 - 911 Access Fee
$6.95 - System Access Fee

$64.45/month total

What do you think? Should I wait? I hate the 3-year contract. Are there promotional codes somewhere? Is there a cheaper way that one of you has been to get this phone like ebay or something? unlocking? Thanks.

Holy crap! 3 year contract? I'd pay more for an unlocked phone than sign a contract that long. Check eBay or Craigslist to see if you can get an unlocked G1 for a decent price.

The are selling the G1 on a 1 year plan for $525, and a 2 year plan for $475 or something like that. How much would it be for one on ebay or craigslist? Then how to do I get it to work on a new plan? I have to unlock the sim card or something? (sorry newb here aswell)

I just got back from the rogers store and played with the fake demo, too bad they didn't have a working one on display. I was actually severely disappointed at the feel of the physical qwerty, or lack-there-of, as the buttons have almost no resistance so you don't feel like you are pressing anything and the whole thing felt overall very cheap and poorly made. Would the real working phone be made better than the blank demo phones? And the guy at the desk wasn't helpful at all and didn't know anything about the phone.

You have to pay for caller ID and voicemail? Damn that sucks, and a three year contract to boot.

If you look on ebay, be VERY careful. There's lots of very misleading ebay auctions. LOTS sellers with clones out there. The clones I saw online today looked almost like the real thing, except they didn't have a working trackball, gps, 3g. The titles and descriptions are also made to think you're getting a G1 phone. They have the Android interface, but not the OS. There were more clones auctions than real deals.

On craigslist, I see them for $180 to $250. I assume that they are real... I don't know what the prices would be for your area.
