I'd go with a good brand of mobo like Asus.
And being able to read DVD's is gonna be real important for everyone so I'd get a DVD reader in there too.
 
yeah if he games, he'll be needing 1gig of ram, and even if he doesnt, it will be noticable.

you dont really need 2-2-2-5 with a64.. i suggest 2x512 value ram

Are you for real? Gigabyte is a very good MB manufacturer. As well as the long forgotten IWill.
