UPDATE: Dell's two newest promotions include a free Epson printer and $50 off plus a $100 rebate.

LOL I just priced a Dell Dimension 4100 for a friend. The total came out to $1,397 just $2 shy of the $1,399 minimum for the $50 discount!

This is for my sister's boss who wants a computer to basically "surf the Internet, burn CDs, MS Office stuff, play some games - not a hard core gamer". The Dell Dimension L, a Gateway, or building a computer is out of the question.

Here are my concerns and questions:
1) Is it worth saving $40 to downgrade to a 20GB instead of 40GB?
2) I opted for the 32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 since it's only $30 more than 16MB ATI Rage 128 Pro, good choice?
3) Should he order this without the E770 17" monitor and save roughly $200?
I doubt he'll need more than 1024x768, what cheap but good monitor would you recommend (not the Samsung 700NF)?
4) He wanted a 2 year warranty, should he downgrade to a 1 year saving $69 or upgrade to a 3 year for $50 which gives him free phone support for the life of the computer?
5) Once he gets his Dell, a friend wants to sell his 128MB PC133 RAM for $50 ... is 256MB way overkill for Windows ME? (I doubt he'll upgrade to W2K)
6) He doesn't want DVD. So we just chose an 8/4/32 CD-RW with a plain 48x CD-ROM in the other bay.
7) Here are his speaker choices which of these gives you the most bang for your buck?
harman/kardon Speakers
Altec Lansing ACS-340 Speakers with Subwoofer [add $30]
Harman Kardon HK-695 Surround Sound Speakers with Subwoofer [add $60]
Altec Lansing THX Certified ADA885 Dolby Digital Speakers with Subwoofer [add $180]
8) Upgraded to SB Live! Value Digital from SoundBlaster 64V PCI LC for $20.
9) Chose the US Robotics 56K PCI Telephony Modem for $60 over the Winmodem.

How often does Dell offer their free CD-RW, free shipping, and so forth promo's? Since next Friday is the end of June, the end of the Quarter and the end of the Fiscal year for most companies do you think Dell might be offering any new promo's within the next week or two? I told my sister's boss to hold off another 2-3 weeks and wait for another Dell promo. Their only current promo is a lame $100 rebate.

I would stick with the large HD. Vid card was good idea. 256 MB is overkill for ME, I believe. Stick with the 2 year warranty.

The only thing I would change is the OS---I'd much rather have 2K or 98SE instead of ME. I was gonna mention an upgrade in RAM, but you already said he's gonna get the other 128MB. I would definitely keep the 40GB HDD, too. Maybe the Altec ACS-340's instead of the HK's

Thanks Captain_Howdy!

I guess my main question concerns the monitor ... The Samsung 753DF or 755DF or keep the Dell E770?

1) No, get all the space you can.
2) Good choice, it's a good value card.
3) I don't know, but a monitor w/ a sony trinitron/mitsibishi diamondtron would be nice.
4) Upgrade, warranties are always nice.
5) 128 should be fine for your boss. But more wouldn't hurt ;)
6) That sounds fine.
7) Altec Lansing ACS-340 Speakers with Subwoofer [add $30]
8) Upgraded for $20.
9) The cheaper one should be good.

Maybe he should get a gateway computer. Here is my computer that I ordered today from gateway for 1700 shipped:

Ross, I believe refurb warranty on Dimensions is 1yr/1yr. I'm pretty sure you can bump that up for a nominal fee.

There's a TON of nice machines in the $750 range.

rbloedow - Although your Gateway machine is nice that's way to overkill for his needs and his budget is around $1,400 shipped.

I am still considering Gateway but have always preferred Dell, Gateway has a pretty good deal on their Gateway Select 1200 CS for $1,099 (plus $95 s/h):

Pretender - Sorry Dell doesn't deliver to the NY state pen ;)

rbloedow - Yeah I know but just like you I'm kind of impartial to Dell, plus through Dell's refer-a-friend program both of us will receive a FREE $25 GiftCertificates.com GC. I can use that to renew my subscription to P...... popular mechanics! Not.

How much is that 'better' system if you downgrade the graphics card to like a 32MB GeForce 2 or Radeon?

there isn't an option, unless you want integrated video :(

If he doesn't play many games I would downgrade the video card and get a better monitor. The E770 is OK, but the Samsung monitors you mentioned are better.

<< 1) Is it worth saving $40 to downgrade to a 20GB instead of 40GB? >>

No. You have to think of the future when buying computers. He'll need that extra 20GB before long.

<< 2) I opted for the 32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 since it's only $30 more than 16MB ATI Rage 128 Pro, good choice? >>

That, or the GF2MX for $130 cheaper. It depends on what games he plays, and how much.

<< 3) Should he order this without the E770 17" monitor and save roughly $200? >>

That's entirely up to him. He might feel better having everything warranteed by one place, or not.

<< I doubt he'll need more than 1024x768, what cheap but good monitor would you recommend (not the Samsung 700NF)? >>

I can't help you here, I'm a pathetic Trinitron/Sony bigot :) I wont buy anything else. I'd tell him to get the 19" Dell Trinitron. It would be the best $290 add on bucks he ever spent. He'll never be sorry. My Mom got this, and just LOVES it.

<< 4) He wanted a 2 year warranty, should he downgrade to a 1 year saving $69 or upgrade to a 3 year for $50 which gives him free phone support for the life of the computer? >>

How computer savy is he? $50 bucks for 3 years IN HOME parts and labor, and lifetime phone support is pretty good for non-geeks.

<< 5) Once he gets his Dell, a friend wants to sell his 128MB PC133 RAM for $50 ... is 256MB way overkill for Windows ME? (I doubt he'll upgrade to W2K) >>

In my opinion, ME needs a MINIMUM of 256MB to run effectivly. Memory is so darn cheap right now, just have him load up. Only, don't buy any more than the standard 128MB that comes with the puter from Dell. They are just too expensive. I ordered an extra 256MB from Crucial for my Mom so she could have 384MB total. It runs very smooth and she can fart around with graphics and MPGs all day without slowing down.

<< 6) He doesn't want DVD. So we just chose an 8/4/32 CD-RW with a plain 48x CD-ROM in the other bay. >>

I'd just get the 12/8/32 burner and no other CD ROM.

<< 7) Here are his speaker choices which of these gives you the most bang for your buck?
harman/kardon Speakers
Altec Lansing ACS-340 Speakers with Subwoofer [add $30]
Harman Kardon HK-695 Surround Sound Speakers with Subwoofer [add $60]
Altec Lansing THX Certified ADA885 Dolby Digital Speakers with Subwoofer [add $180]
>>

My Mom just bought this computer in March. We tried the HK-695s and they sucked so BAD (No midrange whatsoever), we returned them and got some Altec Lansing 404s. Midrange is Important if you're playing games or listening/burning CDs. Their price on the ADA885s is excellent. They retail for over 300 bucks. I bought these for my homebuilt, and love them.

<< 8) Upgraded to SB Live! Value Digital from SoundBlaster 64V PCI LC for $20. >>

I'd get the TB Santa Cruz. The SBL has just given me too many problems.

<< 9) Chose the US Robotics 56K PCI Telephony Modem for $60 over the Winmodem. >>

Good choice. Does he have broadband access? If so, get the NIC too.

AmusedOne - Thanks for your input. Dell is offering a free Epson Stylus 580 printer today along with the $100 rebate. Granted the free printer is only worth $50, I wonder if we should hold out for a free 8/4/32 CD-RW? How often does Dell offer their really good specials?

You'll usually get the best deals on Dell refurbs at the end of quarters. So, about 3 weeks ago was the time to buy :(

Not sure on the retail side of things.

As far as SB Live! I have had 4 systems, and never had even a hint of a problem w/ it.........guess I am just lucky.
