This is for my sister's boss who wants a computer to basically "surf the Internet, burn CDs, MS Office stuff, play some games - not a hard core gamer". The Dell Dimension L, a Gateway, or building a computer is out of the question.
Here are my concerns and questions:
1) Is it worth saving $40 to downgrade to a 20GB instead of 40GB?
2) I opted for the 32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 since it's only $30 more than 16MB ATI Rage 128 Pro, good choice?
3) Should he order this without the E770 17" monitor and save roughly $200?
I doubt he'll need more than 1024x768, what cheap but good monitor would you recommend (not the Samsung 700NF)?
4) He wanted a 2 year warranty, should he downgrade to a 1 year saving $69 or upgrade to a 3 year for $50 which gives him free phone support for the life of the computer?
5) Once he gets his Dell, a friend wants to sell his 128MB PC133 RAM for $50 ... is 256MB way overkill for Windows ME? (I doubt he'll upgrade to W2K)
6) He doesn't want DVD. So we just chose an 8/4/32 CD-RW with a plain 48x CD-ROM in the other bay.
7) Here are his speaker choices which of these gives you the most bang for your buck?
harman/kardon Speakers
Altec Lansing ACS-340 Speakers with Subwoofer [add $30]
Harman Kardon HK-695 Surround Sound Speakers with Subwoofer [add $60]
Altec Lansing THX Certified ADA885 Dolby Digital Speakers with Subwoofer [add $180]
8) Upgraded to SB Live! Value Digital from SoundBlaster 64V PCI LC for $20.
9) Chose the US Robotics 56K PCI Telephony Modem for $60 over the Winmodem.
How often does Dell offer their free CD-RW, free shipping, and so forth promo's? Since next Friday is the end of June, the end of the Quarter and the end of the Fiscal year for most companies do you think Dell might be offering any new promo's within the next week or two? I told my sister's boss to hold off another 2-3 weeks and wait for another Dell promo. Their only current promo is a lame $100 rebate.
