What do you think of THG's new web site?

It's clumsy. All those advertisements make it so clumsy. Not to mention that foolish hammer floating around. By the way. This should of been placed in Off topic. 🙂 General hardware has nothing to do with Website esthetics.

My eyes!
That site has no personality ... it's anything but unique.

Regarding THG's content, their quantity is good, but quality is skimpy.

All they done is take away the colours and just leave everything else as it was - it's sh**e, pathetic and lazy, in fact they probably couldn't be bothered re-designing really. Anand, don't even do anything remotely like THG or VE3D or I'll go insane!!!

Just for comparison, both AT and THG have 10 ads on their frontpage.
Now you tell me which site seems more cluttered.

THG.

I didn't like THG's old design because it was sort of outdated, but I hate the new one because it's messy

I agree with Thorin, the site (to me) seems to have a cleaner look. It's not dominated with oversized advertisements. I wish he would improve the exclusive articles that he writes. The articles seems cluttered and uneasy to follow. The old site wasn't easy to navigate around. I think TH has improved and I like it.

[Horse's voice from Ren & Stimpy]No sir; I don't like it.[/Horse's voice from Ren & Stimpy]

I can't follow it either. And Anand, if Evan Lieb is right, the I have a question: Why the hell would you do that?! The site looks great. I think it's the best looking site for tech reviews out there. Honestly. There's nothing wrong with it. You can only make it worse.

I like how it is now, don't think you should change it. Well, you could change the poll at the front page, it is over a year old now :/

No comparison between AT and THG. Ads jump out at you at THG, while I didn't even realize there were that many at AT. One uses a consistent layout theme, the other mixes and matches like handmedown socks. Look at AT, if you see a pastel box on the sides with rounded corners that's content. If something's set on the white background it's an ad. Straight content right down the middle after the main banner ad. THG has colored boxes on the sides, but they serve no purpose other than to break up the white background. Ads and content mixed. The middle column inlay reminescent of AT's feature article box is an advertisement.

Beyond that though, a big peeve to me is the width required to lose the horizontal scrollbar.
THG requires (including border for IE6 for both since I'm talking screen space in use) 1000 pixels. AT scales down nicely to 800. As someone who likes to have multiple small windows open that's a huge benefit to the design, hope it isn't lost anytime soon.

Though I did see an article I want to read over there, think I'll go do that now.

Can't you give us back the old design, from like 3 or 4 changes back?

The best AT design ever without a doubt IMO 🙂

hehe i like the way it is now, but change is always nice

ok, that article was a bust.

Which version, Sunner?

Dec 1998

Jan 1999

Nov 1999

Aug 2000 Looking pretty current

Jan 2001 Launch of feature article box I think

I did like the 'More Articles' section below with some older content, would be especially handy now with bookmarking. I hardly ever click the [+] More _____ Cards Articles menus for some reason. Out of sight out of mind I guess.

ARGH!! this is the worst website design I've ever seen. I actually hurt my eyes looking at this. They better go back to the old one ASAP.

Personally I'd go back to the August 2000 design as the nicest setup.
I find the current AnandTech to dumbed down. The "Feature Article" box is annoying, and the placement for the news was better set on the right side IMO.
The "Sections" list on the right side imerely adds unnecessary clutter as you could see those by clicking "Reviews" at the top before anyway.
One didnt have to scroll down to see the polls if you at less then 1600x1200 like your forced to now. The Search Box was easier to use and locate before.

About the only thing better with the current layout is that color scheme is much nicer then the bland colours used before.

As for THG's layout... definite improvement. Much nicer and without so much graphical clutter, it seems to load quicker as well. Colour scheme is a bit better. The center panel with all the articles listed is still a mess but it's not too bad all in all.
I prefer AT's layout, but THG has improved.

Said it perfectly.

Why would anyone in their right mind intermix ads and content? It only makes the content less useable. The box ads in the colored sidebars are awful, but what's with the banner ads intermixed with the middle content column? Putting the ads in like that breaks the content into groups, but they aren't logical breaks. What makes "Mainboards & Ram" and "Mass Storage" a logical group? Then "Peripherals & Consumer Electronics" and "Networking"? What do they have to do with each other? Why are they grouped together?

Honestly, THG has got to be the worst designed tech site out there now. I generally like the articles, but the design makes it hard to even know where to click.
