Whatever floats your boat, I guess, but with an automatic that thing will be a real pig to drive. I can't imagine what would motivate me to buy this over a Toyota or Honda.

i'd rather pay the extra 4-5 grand and get one of those **NEW** econo box nissan or honda or even the toyota.

i can't say anything about the price, but i can tell you, i own a 1997 Saturn SC-1 with 148,000 miles, manual trans. i bought it from my Mo-In-Law @ 10K miles in 1998

besides oil changes, and new tires and more batteries than i would have thougth, only the water pump and alternator have been replaced. no other major repairs required. runs great! i love it!
well, except i don't really like the moon roof or the manual trans.

i am still getting 34.5 mpg

i think the thermostat may be out though, the temp gauge has been riding low laterly, gotta take it in and get that checked and rotate the tires

The engine in those cars is weak. I'm shocked they didn't use the Ecotec, what a waste. My gf's 01 Saturn L200 sedan automatic with the 145HP Ecotec 2.2L has plenty of power for normal driving, highway driving, AC on or off, etc. That is a great car and is up for sale with under 60,000 miles. Cheaper than that SC too.....interested? ;)

Those coupes are a lot of fun, they have great versatility, and a reliability that rivals all other makes. Plus it looks pretty nice in silver. I might be in the market for one soon myself, I am tired of my Honda, it keeps breaking down.

why?

1, you can buy them cheap, they have poor resale value, most people that buy them will buy a new one and not even think of buying a used one, usually they trade there 2 or 3 year old grand marquis in on a new merucy grand marquis becuase it needs new tires and a brake job

2, they go forever, 200,000 miles is nothing, even 300,000 miles is not uncommon

3, most original drivers don't abuse them

4 there dependable, and when something needs to be repaired the repair cost is cheap

5 there cheap to insure, there safe cars, with a low theft rate, used stolen parts are worthless, nobody wants them

well, what kind of car are you looking for?

truck/sedan/SUV/compact?
powerful engine?
automatic or stick shift?
power windows, locks, keyless entry, etc or just a basic model?
gas efficient?
lots of cargo space?
reliable?

coming out of college, for example, i needed a small, cheap car for commuting to work that HAD to be reliable. the best choices were the honda civic and the toyota corolla - two cars consistently rated as the most reliable on the road, with great gas mileage to boot. ended up getting a 1999 corolla with 42k miles for under 5k. the engine is nothing amazing (120hp) but it gets the job done.

in general, you'll want to:

* read this site
* read consumer reports and other review magazines/websites to find the cars that are the best in the categories you care about
* use kelley's blue book (kbb.com) to check the value of a car
* sign up for a month for carfax.com and check the VIN before buying any used car - this is CRUCIAL to avoid getting a car that's been in an accident, has water damage, etc

They get pretty poor gas mileage though, a freind of mine showed me a video of his 92 grand margquis jumping train tracks, it got I would say 3 feet off the ground for about a 25ft distance. It landed hard and bottomed out front and rear. The video was his thrid attempt, the car is I believe at 270k miles now. When he landed the thrid time, it fixed a static problem he was having with the radio. Yeah they are tough. But gas mileage seems to be a concern for the op. He gets at best 17mpg with his grand marquis.

i have a 94 grand marquis, with 210,000 miles on it, it's been a great car

92's were ok, but 94/95 were great years, 96-98 had bad intake manifold problems, them 99 to 02 they were great, 03 they were more problems, then 04 they got better.

I get 23 miles per gallon average now, about 21 average in winter, have gotten up 28 on a trip babing it without using the cruise control

17 mpg? he must have a lead foot or drive in heavy city traffic

Price seems a little high for a 2002 Saturn otherwise it's just a regular car.

6) Everyone around you will slow down thinking you might be a cop. ;) Especially if you get one in black.

...however, since MPG seems to be an issue for the OP, I'd say Camry or Civic.
