what do you think of the sapphire x700 pro 128mb card

I'm building a new system and have so far ordered a

MSI rs480 motherboard with integrated video (its supposed to be 9600SE class) and a athlon 64 3200.

i'm a pretty light gamer, i played World of warcraft for a while, and i'm planning to play some HL2 and CS probably in the future when i have some time.

i've seen the sapphire x700 pro 128mb on pricewatch refurb for $131 shipped (and i dont have to pay tax since its not in CA). the next thing seem to be the 6600 gt at around $180 (cant find it anywhere refurb). Do you guys think this is a good buy for the money? i dont really plan on gaming THAT heavily. my other options in that price range seem to be a new 6600 non gt.

also would it be worth it to get the 256mb x700 pro. its like $165 refurb + CA tax for me on newegg (so i guess like $180)

anyway... i've raed a lot of reviews and the benchmarks seems to be pretty inconsistant. seems like the x700 is somewhere between a normal 6600 and a gt 6600. the price seems prety good, but if anyone has a better idea i'd like to hear it

It's a good buy. You can also get the refurbed GT instead for 18$ more.
But why did you get an integrated video mobo if you're planning to buy a video card?

still not sure im gonna have time to game. plus it was still cheaper than the boards without integrated video. the integrated video boards are like $95.

X700 Pro looks like a good value for the money, it runs very close to 6600GT in most benchmarks except for Doom 3. A 128Mb X700 Pro will give solid performance for the occassional gamer who appreciates performance. The 6600GT is the faster of the two, however, and if there isn't a big price jump it is the better buy.

The X700pro 128mb card appears to beat out the 9800pro in about all benchies, is available in PCI-e form and costs less too. If you prefere an Ati card in the mid-range it is an excellent choice, IMHO.

I would go for it 🙂

I beats the GT in benchmarks..manyhttp://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/powercolor-x700pro.html

this place is AMD and Nvidia strong hold so you usually wont hear that thus GT is way more popular because of that. well plus it's better overall.. but not at that price differential.

X700 Pro was faster than 6600GT in HL2 & CS:S benchmarks almost completely across the board.

6600GT was faster than X700 Pro in Doom 3, Halo, Painkiller, 3DMark 2005, and Far Cry almost completely across the board.

Most folks are pretty tuned in to HL2, since that is the game that the whole world is playing. I'm under the impression that HL2 was developed with ATI in mind though, and Doom 3 was definitely developed for GF6000 series. I think Far Cry is a good, manufacturer-neutral real-world benchmark. Far Cry gives the nod to 6600GT if ever so slightly.

If you use Far Cry as the ultimate in real-world neutral benchmarking, the X700 Pro and the 6600GT are really pretty much a coin-flip. The $15 you'd save with the X700 Pro combined with the higher framerates in the game that is the most fun make the X700 Pro the smart buy.

One more small plus for the X700 Pro, it tends to catch or pass the 6600GT whenever resolution is cranked up to 1600x1200 and FSAA/Ansio are turned on. The 6600GT tends to wilt a bit when you put it under a heavy workload. I like the fact that the ATI solutions are at their best when you really go after best rendering quality and not just most frames per second.

Far Cry was developed hand in hand with Nvidia. Notice only NVIDIA can do the HDR implemented in this game, they could have chosen one ATI could do as well but they didn't.

X700P for $131 sounds good, and will be much (~40%, going by core and memory clock speeds alone) faster than a $115 6600.

If you're not even sure you'll game, a $115 6600 is probably a better buy than a $165 X700P. Plus, I think the 6600's core OCs very well, so while the memory will limit you to low levels of AA, boosting the core to 400-500MHz should result in good framerates for most titles at 10x7. Plus, Thief 3 is a nice bundled game, and you're sure to get a DVI adapter and an HDTV cable.

But, if the X700P refurb works out at $131, it's your best bet if high framerates are your first priority. No cables are guaranteed, though you may not need them. You have to wonder, too, why someone would return such a new card so soon.

Eh, it's probably worth a try. If it's broken, it won't cost much to return, and you can always settle for a cheaper 6600 or aim for a faster card.

Wow, I had no idea that Far Cry was created with a bias toward Nvidia cards. I've never heard that before anywhere.

I thought Far Cry showed up after being developed from scratch by an Eastern European team. I never heard anything about a video card manufacturer being involved in the development process.

What's more, when Far Cry first showed up at retail, I remember seeing it running on a high end display machine at my local CompUSA. I laughed when I saw it because it was running on a Geforce FX5950 and the card was flashing and glitching while trying to render the trees and landscape.

I thought I'd read that the Radeon 9700s/9800s didn't have those issues, and Far Cry ran better on the ATI solutions at the time.

Guess I was wrong.

I was rather interested in those mobos when Anand first reviewed them, & since then, they seemed to have fallen off the planet?...

Hey pete have a look at this thread
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=52765

Impressive.

Far Cry originally ran faster or prettier (depending on which of nV's drivers you used) on ATi DX9 cards than nV's FX cards. Initially it still ran faster on ATi's X series vs. nV's GF6 series, but I think things have evened out now on this latest generation of cards (no doubt b/c the GF6 series is at least equal to the X series in PS performance, unlike the 9x00 and FX series).

Watch-out if you are an overclocker. I beleive MSI has removed overclocking in this particular board. I read some info about it at Xtreme systems or somewheres
