I'm just curious, has anyone used a P4 yet? I am getting one tomorrow from Intel PR and I'm trying to determine what I should expect. If you have used one, drop your comments here.

I got one. Its great. In my opinion, the ASUStek P4T i850 motherboard craftmanship is superb. It is the most stable & robust platform I have ever used. I am running a retail socket 423 @ 1800mhz @ default voltage (1.70) and can bring it to 100% stability @ 1.75. (15x120x1.75)

<< How is overclockability? >>

Wow it is a snap w/softmenu. You can even independantly adjust memory speed even though mine is 100% stable running @ 480mhz....(thats PC-3840 for all you DDR guys :p )

You guys know that this is a temporary P4, the dual p4 will be in different package in a few month.. you think it's worth it to wait a little for better p4s to come out instead of wasting money on the current version ? The new one is dual enable and use a different socket so current mobo for p4 won't work... but that can all change..

Wise words.... If I were to just wait every time a new component came out I would always be waiting, no?

I suspect that you compare this 12-layer mobo to the regular 4-layer mobos for the usual P-III and Athlons, even though it's built and priced like a server board...

Check out the other 12-layer boards out there (there is only one with Micron chipset, 64bit@66Mhz PCI and 133@266DDR memory bus and Athlon support).

Don't get me wrong, the P4 is a good CPU for some tasks, for other tasks, the T-bird with a standard MSI 4 layer mobo is just as good, and with the board mentioned above... well, even the 900Mhz Athlon is comparable to the P4 solution in some cases.

For 3D professional work (and yes, for gaming), i have to admit that the P4 is great though, just wait until applications and games starts to use that extra set of instructions that comes with the P4, then we will really see what it can do...

(if you see me contradicting myself all of the time, well, i do)

Ehh, the P4 sucks pretty hard in 3d apps, in games it´s OK, the only game it really excels at is Q3.

Exactly.. it's kind of strange, the way people need to categorize a CPU. Some examples :

K6-X series : got label'd as a lousy performer, but the k6-3 is faster per-mhz than a P3 OR Athlon, in integer business apps.

Celeron original : got label'd as a dog, even when the A version made it a sweet processor. Even at the end, only the overclockers knew of it as something fast.

Athlon : got label'd as faster-than-P3, which stuck even when it sometimes wasn't true (comparing CUmine to Athlon classic with 1/3 cache multiplier, in Quake3, for instance)

Pentium4 : Good in games and professional apps. Where the hell did this come from? I haven't seen the P4 win just about any game benchmarks other than Quake3. And in professional applications involving rendering, or 3d work, The P4 gets its butt kicked. (see link posted above). However, it does perform well in spec, and that sweet memory bandwidth gives it an advantage in streaming apps.

I totally agree, if you plan to use it to run benchmarks it really sucks, but if you are using Softimage, 3D studio MAX, Lightwave or such a program with the latest drivers and optimizations, you are wrong...

Yes, I realize that, but I'm getting it for free as a review unit so money doesn't matter right now.

The Dual P4 will be great though.

The P4 will excel when it reaches 2ghz and all the new technology is actually incorporated into OSs and apps.
