Wasn't one of the four counts of obstructing justice, her saying to a reporter, "I am innocent?"
Correct me if I am wrong about that.

From what I read, her broker said some stock might go down, so she sold. The difference to her if she had waited was what $50,000.00.

If she serves jail time, Ken Lay should be taken out back and shot. That would be justice.

Fining / putting on probation should be the max IMO.

So if insider trading is morally acceptible, I can get my friend who works at McDonald's to slip me $20's out of the cash register? That would be OK with you?

It wouldn't be ok with me or the police, but your friend would probably get probation too.

i dunno man. what she did is something that every human being would do given the chance. at least that's my opinion. and its done daily by thousands of people daily. in my opinion, she should be fined and put on probation. puttin a 60+ old woman in jail won't change anything as its not attacking the problem itself at all.
also, please don't hate people because they have a tv show or a billion dollars, success is something majority of people cannot have.

I agree.

Hey, I agree: The people she collaborated with should also get jail time.

I don't understand the people who are saying "Well, other people would have done the same thing in that situation...."

She isn't being sentenced for insider trading. Its for lying under oath.

I think she should be fined a fair amount of money but no jail time--that is rather stupid.

I'm indifferent to her as a person, but I've always thought throughout the trial that she was being made an example of.

Even if she was convited of insider trading (which she wasn't), she profited, like, a few thousand dollars. it's not like she bankrupt a company and caused hundreds of people to lose their pensions and retirement funds.

Discuss.

I don't think she should go to jail at all, but I do think she should be fined 3X the money she made through her illegal trading (with some sizable minimum based on her total value).

Make her pay where it really hurts.

I think she should receive a hefty fine, and probation. I don't believe her crime deserves any length of imprisonment.

well said.

5 months is nothing, why only 5 months? is it because it was such a small amount of money?

is it her fame?

what if it was 45 million instead of 45 thousand?

I dont get it, she broke the law regardless....if it was me I woulda got 2 years minimum.

the justice system had a chance to make a statement, they blew it imo.

I theink it's a shame that martha is going to Jail for selling stock to cover her own ass, but Ken Lay is still free, after intentionally robbing and screwing half of the nation for as much money as he could.

No matter what Martha's sentence is, the Enron cretins should get something 100 times worse. But they won't.

I hope Ken Lay gets 20 years and is forced to sell everything he has to repay those he swindled. :|

I think Martha's sentence for the crime she committed is adequate, but they should tack on 10 years for arrogance and hubris. The sooner she's off the public scene, the better. :frown:

I don't give a crap. She can die or go free and it wouldn't make a bit of difference to me. It's not like I'm gonig to be living in fear knowing that Marths Stewart is walking the streets.
