I have a fairly broad musical taste, but have only recently started listening to moby. I know he's largely popular in some circles, but wondered what any of you who have heard him think about him. I think his music is amazing, especially his stuff on "Play" and "I like to score"

I wasn't aware he was an artist, I thought he was a DJ. DJ's play records/CDs don't they?

I would call him an artist as he creates the music. Similar to what a director does for a movie.

If he mixes anything like he did for the Sci-Fi channel commercial, he bites. Mixes like a 2 year old.

Tiranee:

Ouch, I wouldn't judge the man's ability on a TV comercial. If you don't like him, that's one thing, but I wouldn't say Michael Jordan was a terrible basketball player because the only time I saw him was in space jam.

He's terrific. Music from the last CD has been used in over 700 different movies, commercials, etc.

This is weird. I started playing Porcelain, then I opened up AnandTech and this thread is at the top. Weird coincidence. I think his stuff is pretty good personally.

I have heard a couple of his songs before and have liked them and there is one on the Gone in 60 Seconds CD that is pretty cool too!

Play is a great album. I found a limited release that came with a second cd of similar stuff. I have almost all of his albums. I first found out about him in 91. My favorite albums by him are Animal Rights and Moby. The album End of Everything he did as well as Early Underground are also good choices.

EDIT - I have also seen him in concert.

I personaly don't like his music....BUT after seeing him reherse I was very impressed by his musical ability.

He may be a D.J. but he is also a musician. He seems to be able to play most instruments with a high level of skill.

During the rehersal he played some Led Zep and Santana on guitar.

And as always this is just MHO.

He's kinda cool. A friend of mine has been listening to him for a while. I've listened to a few of his songs. Typically, his style is not my kind of thing. But, I find his music to be very relaxing.

I kinda dig his song/video with Gwen Stefani. :)

madmacks,

I didn't see the Casio at the show I went to. Would have been cool though. I did see him jump over his keyboard though. He is kind of strange but great just the same.

I saw a cable broadcast of one of his shows. He is ok, but I was blown away by this Japanese band "Cornelius" that played with him. Anyone ever heard of them?

I went to see him in concert last year. It was one of the best concerts I have ever attended. Small but intimate (The place wasn't that big to begin with). I definately recommend his music to anyone. Just my thoughts.

Moby is one of my favorite artists. His live show is amazing! I didn't see the Casio thing that was mentioned, but he did do something that I thought was funny for his song "Thousand" (runner up for Maxim's "hardest song ever"). First, he apologized profusely for what he was about to do...then he took off his shirt. He pushed a button on his mixer, and Thousand started (there's not much to it, just a beat that goes from ~50 bpm to 1000bpm, then back down). He then stood up on his mixer, and stood there while the beats got faster and faster. The strobes on the stage were set exactly to the beat...I really thought I was going to have a seizure when the song climaxed at 1000bpm. It was blinding, but one of the more memorable things I've seen at a concert. :)

I would have to say that I'd never heard of him until the soundtrack in the beach - his entire Play album is extremely good - very very good. He is musically very original and skillful.
